I am not that intelligent for an Aspie
Reminds me a littel bit of the new BBC "Sherlock" series, where Watson gets all upset about Sherlock not knowing that the earth rotates around the sun, and not the other way around. While this is some basic stuff, it is not a sign of intelligence, but a lack of understanding caused by education that was not geared towards your needs. I used to suck at math as well because of several factors, and it took me a while until I realized I was actually quite adept with numbers and patterns, I just lack the proper education to make good use of it.
Besides that, I really do not like how intelligence usually refers to mathematic problem solving. Intelligence is not only the ability to solve a problem theoretically, but how you put that knowledge into action. Me, personally, despite being rather clumsy and having abysmal fine motor control (paired with a dulled sense of touch), am a very physical and motion-oriented type. To put it another way: Even you could beat Stephen Hawking in the 100m hurdles. Now, this is a little exaggerated, and not intended as disrespect against Mr. Hawking and his disability (in fact, the man is the living example of that your mind determines your limits, even a man that is completely immobilized can become a true mover and shaker in his or her chosen subject), but to show that intelligence is always a matter of scale. That is not to say that there are no people that are dumb in any way. I've met them. I've known people that are not only completely disfunctional at logic, but also in social matters (more so than any AS-person could ever be), and at the same time seem to have no knowledge of their own body and its capabilities, even going so far as routinously confusing their left and right hand. And I am talking about adults, noless.
Pardon me, but that is not true at all. Struggling to express oneself verbally and spontaneously is NOT the same thing as not being able to learn a foreign language. There are many of us on here who excel at learning foreign languages (myself included). It is simply NOT CORRECT to analyse yourself and say "I'm an Aspie and I'm not good at XYZ - therefore all other Aspies must be bad at it as well."
This error has been pointed out many times before in this forum on other threads, yet many members still persist in making sweeping statements about all people with Asperger's based on their own personalities and abilities. It's nonsense. We are all individuals. We are not clones of you. Just because you're bad at learning French doesn't mean all autistic people are. There are many people on here whose special interest is learning languages. There is even one lady who is a translator by profession. I am also a qualified translator myself.
Please would people stop making these silly assumptions that every single autistic person on the planet is identical to them. It's irritating. Just like NTs, we all have our own unique skills and personalities. OK?
I'm kind of like that even with my special interests. I have special interests but I'm no expert at any of them, well not super educated at them anyway. I do have a learning disability though, dyscalculia and central auditory processing disorder which doesn't help. I have a hard time memorizing things.

I began reading at an early age. I also didn't speak until I was 3/4ish. Sometimes, I feel like I am Homer Simpson-dumb in some fields, but Einstein-like in others. But yeah, I'm somewhere in the middle, even though I see myself as Homer.

The image of us as savants is a media misinterpretation of Autism.

What, you don't want some dominatrix owning your ass? Seriously, I've seen it happen all too often. The 'soft' aspie or aspie-ish guy ends up with the Narcissist wife who treats him like dirt. I hate abusive relationships of any type, but there's something about a dude getting Billy-Bibbited that sets my testosterone on fire. Maybe I've dealt with too many Alpha females in my time . . .
Worse than those militant ball-buster types (you can spot one of them a mile away), are the manipulative ones that string you along, knowing how lonely and desperate you are, making you feel happy and wanted. Yet they always keep you at arms length and the moment you feel strongly enough about them to want more in return, they dig in the "Friendship Dagger", which means the "friendship" will last about two or three days before they become "uncomfortable" with you and start "distancing themselves". Assuming they don't have someone else come in and do that dirty work for them. Of course, some just shoot you down right away. At least that's honest.
Um, yeah... Getting back on topic...
Just because you pick up something doesn't mean your aspie condition will make you good at it. The flipside is that you'll probably concentrate on it to the point where you will eventually get good at it. It doesn't mean your dumb if you get a bad grade. Remember that schools are not about fostering intelligence or the development of skill. Schools are about compliance and subservience. Hence the kids that do well are not the smartest ones, but the ones that kiss enough ass and attend to all the ret*d busy work.
Yeah, I'm bitter...sorry.
I'm bitter for the same exact reason. High school was a minefield of cruelty.
