Volunteer groups can be a good thing, with the approach of light-touching a variety of groups, because a volunteer group can be as disorganized as anything else!

And you might have better luck with a group working on a local issue where they can get better feedback and also more healthy interplay between theory and practice going. For example, some communities have a Cat Action Team "CAT" that tries to help feral cats through a practice of capture, spay, and release. This group might both be more appreciative of volunteers without expecting them to be "perfect" (whatever that means) and also more realistic and more willing to learn from mistakes, than might groups working on more abstract issues such as world peace, democracy, human rights, as important as these issues are.
