I maintain a web page for myself. It gives me much more control over than is possible with Facebook.

I have an account but only log-in about once a month or so. Don't really "get" the whole concept, and fortunately it is just not something that really interests me.

Having said that, I must admit I recently learned about the passing of a distant relative (in terms of their relationship to me, not their distance from me, if that makes sense) via FB and I can't see how I'd have known about their death had it NOT been for FB. I went to the funeral and saw a bunch of people I'd not seen in years, possibly decades, was able to offer my sympathy to the deceased's brother, etc. I was glad I was able to attend and all there seemed to be glad to see me.

Dunno, I guess I'm kind of conflicted about the whole business of social media, but I'm also glad that it is something I seem to be able to take or leave. I know I have to stay away from things like browser-based on-line games, given how I found myself playing Ikariam just about 24/7 for six months a few years ago. Quitting that was the right thing to do, but I was in an almost physical pain for a few days after I deleted/handed off my accounts on various "worlds."

Eh, sorry for rambling.

^ That's true. FB was useful for learning about major world events very quickly. It came in handy back during the tsunami that hit Japan. I was able to check in on my friends and make sure they were okay. I always thought of that before deleting my account and had that never occurred, I would have deleted it months ago.

On Monday, my 14 day wait period is over and my data will be gone foreverrr! Not only am I happy about it, but I'm on a "I-want-to-delete-my-presence-from-the-internet" kick. So I've deleted every single piece of personal info (not like I had much anyway), save for this forum and one other, because you guys are a major source of support for me atm.

I tried a blog and wrote anonymously, but it only lasted a few days before I didn't know what to post. I don't have the patience to write out all my thoughts. This is why journal keeping never works for me over the long-term. I wish I had a substitute.

I would like to delete my account. I log in almost everyday but I post stuff on my page very rarely (I think I haven't posted anything this year). Sometimes I like something someone has posted just to be nice and to show that I'm not completely cold person. If I laugh out loud at something that someone has posted (something that is meant to be funny, of course) I usually like it. (That sentence would have been a little difficult to comprehend, or at least a bit weird, ten years ago. :)) I don't comment on anything because I usually have nothing to say. I think I'm also too shy to say anything. I'm almost as shy in FB as I'm irl.

I have noticed that FB makes people kind of self-centered, or at least it shows how self-centered people are. It showed how self-centered I am. At one point I could think days what I was going to post next on my account, about what people would like the most, what would make me look good and smart and interesting (of course I'm thinking about it now, too, but it's harder in English). I didn't do my postings very often but still. Luckily I don't have a camera...

(Or maybe I just envy people who have interesting things in their lives.)

I really would like to leave the Facebook but I'm afraid it would seem kind of rude, like I'd like to abandon my few friends.. Or would it seem rude, really?

I hated it when I was on. Too much of the wrong information about people, their biases, etc. Especially like religious stuff.

Good call.

I had one for a year a couple of years back. Had to because of University so I could get a hold of people in my class if there was something urgent regarding my education.
FB is the biggest kaka ever. People get sick from it, glued to it night and day for sick amounts of hours discussing idiotic things.
And then they tell me I'm wasting my time playing a game for 6 hours which stimulates my brain and cognitive activity with puzzles and interaction.

Ha.

I like this.

But really, I understand that Facebook can be useful for some people. I don't like that people are made to use it for "educational" or some other reasons, though.

Jeah, only thing it was good for was getting in touch with all my classmates. But after a couple of weeks after everyone made a Facebook account they made a sheet in class with all the emails so I liked that better but then you already had a FB account and people were tagging you etc. I never liked being tagged, what I do is my business unless I willingly stand in front of a camera so I myself can upload pictures on my account.

I've come close to deactivating my Facebook a few times, but I haven't done it yet. This may sound petty, but I get resentful of some people who always go on vacations, always go to fancy restaurants, always post pictures of their big houses, their families, etc. It's tough when you're barely getting by, dealing with the daily demons many of us have to deal with.

It also reminds me of what a loser I was in high school with few friends, having to eat finger food for lunch because I couldn't sit at a table. And those few I was friends with don't remember me. I'm starting to get worked up now. Sorry.

So far, I haven't deactivated...yet.

I deleted my Facebook account and am happy I did.

I started with about a dozen "Friends". Then over time, one by one, I dropped or silenced the ones I found tiresome. Eventually I was down to 3 or 4. I eventually realized I resented the time I spent reading their inane posts. So I just got rid of the account all together.

The worst thing about FB is that you learn too much about people from their posts and comments.
I was shocked to see homophobic, racist, and other abusive content posted by people whom I'd known for years and believed to be tolerant and good-hearted.
Too many disappointments lately.
I haven't deleted my account yet for the only reason that I'm following some photography pages there; but I had to remove some guys from my friend list.

I definitely learned that some of the people I thought were wonderful were actually terrible people!

I deleted my FB account a year or so ago. The whole thing seemed pointless. My wall was full of idiotic crap by "friends" who I didn't really know. I don't converse much anyway - I almost live in silence with little need for chit-chat with anyone anyway and FB chatter seemed even more inane. Can't see the attraction with FB at all.

Yes, it made little sense to me and I didn't fully understand why everyone would want to put their life out there in the open. I am very uncomfortable with the fact that so many people will allow so much self disclosure among people they hardly even know. The idea that everyone is sharing personal info/thoughts that one would normally only share with his/her best friend makes me extremely distrustful of people.

There was also too much of "everyone should think the way I do!" I don't believe in telling people how to live their lives, and am more of a "live and let live" person, so this really grated my nerves. When people tell others how to live, they are being egotistical, arrogant, and assuming that they know what is right for everyone else. I really despise that type of personality so I'd rather stay away from it.
