I was dating Aaron, Darlene's brother, when that song came out. She was dating a regular guy then and everytime that song came on the radio he threw a little temper fit. His name was Randy and he had blowdried hair and shot pool for a living.

I have a bad taste in my mouth about Thailand, but that's only because of my friend Darlene. I dated her brother right after I left my ex husband and that's how I got to know her. She actually got me the job at the gas station where I met my husband now. She married this guy from Thailand back in the late 70s. She went with him over there several times but they lived in Birmingham, in Homewood and she had two little girls. She went over there with him after the youngest was born and they stayed on a several months visit. She told me why she didn't like it, cause they did ladies like crap over there. Her MIL used to fuss at her for walking ahead of her husband when they went shopping. Well, she got ready to come home and he wanted to stay another month or so and she told him ok and that it was ok with her if he kept the girls there with them to see their grandparents and he would bring them back when he came home. Well, he didn't come home for about two years!

She finally got her kids back and when they came home, they couldn't speak English! She ended up marrying another guy from there though, so I don't know. But from her experiences I just don't like the place. I know that's judging harshly and based on one or two people's experiences, but it's the only one I know about it.

If you go, be careful.

Although, I hear that one night in Bangcok and the world's your oyster..... ;-)

I am pretty good at taking care of myself in dangerous third world countries. I lived in Harbin of all places, one of the homes of the Russian and Chinese mafias, and I traveled to Indonesia when there was civil unrest and once got arrested for accidently going on the wrong bridge. I was traveling with a Japanese girl, and they tried to force her to wear a veil. Yes, it was that bad. They threatened to lock us up, but finally let us go. Pretty sure Thailand is much safer than Indonesia.

I am going, if I go, for the stem cell options, not for the women. If I was going somewhere for women, it would be one of the following:

Russia
Finland (introverts)
Mongolia
Latvia/Lithuania/Estonia/Belarus
Buenas Aires
Harbin, China

I'm from West End, in Birmingham.

Well, the only thing I know about Birmingham is some of the civil rights incidents. I'm pretty sure they got rid of the "whites only" signs about 50 years ago, though it took federal troops to do it - so it can't be that bad, right?

Whatever it's like, I'm still going to guess that Indonesia is worse. :)

Please allow me to talk you out of this.

The concepts of tolerance and acceptance of disabilities are weakly developed in that part of Asia. I have seen people who've never worked a day in their life, who are completely destitute, for no other reason than being "different." Even in Thailand there is a strong Confucian cultural thread. In Confucian Civilization the nail that stands out gets pounded down.

Here's a word you may hear muttered about you if you go there - "suh buh." It is not a nice expression.

Don't do it.

I have only ever heard good things about Thailand, from a tourist perspective. For the longest time I thought Thailand was the worst country in the world because of the pedo-tourism that they were famous for back in the... 80's? 90's?
But nowadays it seems like the perfect place to vacation/extended vacation. I have heard of several people renting a house somewhere and taking 6 month or a year off and just go relax and recharge. Apparently it's very inexpensive to live there, a month salery would you set you up real cosy for six months there.
So I think, if you can save up some money and be sure you can continue your studies, it would be awsome!

Yes, difference is, my disability manifests itself as introversion in most cases. Asian cultures are far more tolerant of introversion/social anxiety than Americans. I lived in another Asian nation for a little more than a year.

I'd say the worst possible place for me is around Latin Americans, with white Americans a close runner-up.
