Perhaps you had ADHD as well as aspergers, Graelwyn? It would certainly explain the extraverted side of you when you were younger. I'm only guessing as I don't know your life history, but that was the first thing that popped into my mind!
Or perhaps you have another ASD instead of aspergers. Either way, you are certainly not an NT, so don't take what your mother says to heart.
That's what I was wondering, Robert. My nephew was diagnosed with ADHD, before AS, and he is fairly outgoing, and very interested in being social. He's not successful, but he's got a determined streak, and I have to give him credit.
Graelwen, it may be your mother doesn't understand that ASD's are neurological. Having Asperger's or any other autism is not a matter of how we were raised. It seems she's reacting to a stigma of the syndrome.
But you can't change her mind about this. She is using a defense mechanism to protect herself, and unfortunately, it's hurting you.
Maybe some kind of professional help would be useful. You need some outside support.
Good luck.
