You should not be combing your hair in the first place, except possibly if you slowly comb a small section of hair at a time to avoid the pulling and tearing. An afro pic is the proper tool.

I understand the cultural baggage surrounding hair that you are talking about.

No believe me!! I always used an afro pick--a METAL one! I didn't use combs anymore because my hair actually broke them. The metal afro picks didn't work either. Combing was never easy unless I threw conditioner in my hair and left it in for a while. You are right about the pulling and tearing.

i just want to support what you do! who cares what your mom says? at the end of the day, it's YOUR f******g hair!
i had the same issue with my mom, i'm 27, hispanic, and had dreadlocks. i loved them so much, they were a beautiful combination of easy to maintain, but fun to mess with. and the soft texture, the smell of lavender and tree tree from the oils i used, yes! as i was applying for positions, my mom got into my head with the idea that i wouldn't get a job with my hair that way. i cut it all off. and am in the process of growing it back. i definitely could have had them and work (NONPROFIT WORK! HOW COULD I HAVE CUT IT OFF!!)

do you
