It was nice of the mother to send the letter. I was just scared of her reaction to me. Both her daughters committed suicide. Her feelings about me were ambivalent; she saw me as the least of the evils.

oh dear god - what a family. I'd say "that poor mother" but first I'd want to know more about that family!

I didn't find them to be really dysfunctional, actually. I think the parents feared confrontation, and were quite passive-aggressive. The older sister lived with a 30 year old man at age 13. She was pretty precocious.
