I guess I always think of it as being a Cash song. I love NIN, and they did a great job writing that song, but Cash's version seems like it was made for him. (Sorry to get into a music debate here).

There's a guy who used to post a lot with the screen name "Cash."

His avatar is a young Johnny Cash with a guitar.

Oh, you're right Aurora. Just had me second-guessing myself.
Reznor reported feeling odd when he heard it on audio, but crying when he saw the video. I think he gave the rights to Cash just before he died.

Colossal NIN fan so I ofc got the lyric straight off the bat! The ending of Hurt always disturbed me profoundly, that shattering collision when it abruptly smashes to a close lingers for a long time.
