and Mark Knopflers favourite style is finger picking too

Oh yes, definitely a great player. I was going to mention finger-style, but it slipped my mind.

As a bonus, I feel it would help a lot more than strumming with his goal of getting girls to notice him B)

There's a guy on YouTube named Troubleclef that I used to watch a lot, he does his own finger-style interpretations of old pop songs (lots of Beach Boys and Beatles). I try not to watch him for too long, because it always makes me want to just give up and quit playing

Haha, your trouble with Troubleclef reminds me of a story I heard about Pete Townsend. The first time he went to see Jimi Hendrix play, he was so totally psyched out by Jimi that he didn't pick up a guitar for several months after because he knew he could never be that good.

Mark knopfler is a really bad example of fingerpicking, because I've not seen anyone who picks like him, it's a very weird take on fingerstyle.

I don't see why having his own way is bad. He was good enough for Chet Atkins to invite him to make an album with him. Mr Atkins was the master of finger picking. May he rest in peace.

Yeah, I don't usually get discouraged that easily, there's just something about the way he makes it look so effortless >_<

And here I am, still struggling to properly play Paul Simon's American Tune. At least I can do Scarborough Fair.

That wasn't my point, mark is a great player. But if I was going to learn someone how to play fingerstyle, mark is not an example I would use, because his style is so unusual. Unless the person wanted to sound exactly like mark.
Chet is a much better example in my opinion, especially for travis picking stuff.
