I hate that cars have to be such a necessary evil. You can't go anywhere that's halfway-decent without one. But If I learned how to drive I can't afford. a car. I can't afford to look after one. And in a few years it'll break down because the car companies deliberately build them that way.

And then there's the undeniable fact that they're basically pollution-spewing coffins on wheels that somehow turn people into ludicrous idiots the second they get behind the wheel, as if they weren't idiots already, texting while driving and refusing to let pedestrians, i.e. me, cross a street, and being unable to read the directions on a stop sign.

Same and that’s my point why I haven’t bought another car since my last one broke down.

Also you forgot the road rage for being too slow, being too fast, being too close, being too far, looking at them, taking their parking spot etc seems everyone who drives puts off leaving until the last minute meaning they have to rush or their be late so getting in a accident or running over pedestrians is just needed or they’re be late. Who cares about that guy in the wheel using the cross walk cause the driver will be late

Some cities have trains, I'm not sure if that's an option for you. But I agree, cars are the bane of my existence. I wish I could ride a motorcycle so I never have to drive a car again!

You forgot to mention car insurance and the tagging/title system, the biggest scams of them all when it comes to vehicles.

Hmm, I always felt automobiles are cheap compared to other things... Health insurance being one of them in recent years being the biggest impact on my budget, almost equal to my housing costs! My transportation costs, is my 2nd cheapest mandatory expenses. That’s with two cars...

Ah, that makes sense. I never really thought about it enough to look it up.

Now that I think about it, having a car just is a lot better than having to use a bus. When you have a car, you don't have to listen to loud people in the same space, you don't have to deal with their smells, you don't have to fear that someone else there is going to attack you or something, you can take care of your own plans without having to fear about them being messed up because the bus isn't on time, you can keep a change of clothes and other necessary stuff in the car all the time and finally, you can actually go to rural places without waiting the rare bus for hours and having to walk many kilometers to get where you want.

Of course, the last one has nothing to do with driving in the city, but I know many people who live in a place with good public transport have a car mainly for that reason.

Sometimes I worry my mother has road rage, or may get a more severe case. I've told her a few times it's just not worth getting really angry over something that might lead to legal issues, injury or even death. Which is weird advice, coming from me.

Joe90, see if you can take a bus scheduled an hour earlier than you need to be at work. Yes, that means you'll have to occupy yourself for that hour. Take along something to read, some needlework, or an MP3 player with tunes you like.

If one hour earlier works out okay, see if there are any that are half an hour earlier... Maybe that will work out okay. It all depends on the timing of rush hour where you are.

Rush hour is unfortunately a fact of life in modern cities. You aren't the only one who has to cope with it, we all do.

I did leave 50 minutes before the starting time of my shift. I thought that even if the bus was held up in traffic, it shouldn't be more than 20 minutes late and that would still get me into work early. But there was just no sign of any buses at all, and I was just getting frustrated. I would have walked to work, but I didn't really know the way, as the walk route isn't the same at the bus route, and I was afraid of getting lost. So I was just getting angry.

I think I just get frustrated with how overpopulated a place as small as the UK is, and the way more and more houses are being built which means more and more people and more and more cars, and the roads just aren't big enough. In most cities and towns in the UK, the roads were built for horses and carts. Now that there are about a billion cars on the roads, it is impossible to make the roads wider because of how the old buildings are placed, so it just becomes one big nightmare, and just more and more people are coming in the UK and it's all just overwhelming.

When you find the way, just walk. Saves lots of headaches.

If I lived 3 miles from my job, I would walk it most days. The commute would be less than my present commute.

i don't view people in cars have the same rights as pedestrians, whenever i walk across a road and they signal me to cross i dont acknowledge them because they don't deserve to, not from me anyway

maybe when one day i might have a car and drive about, i might ask for the same courtesy, but i'm unlikely ever to drive in my life

Cars are killing the planet, humanity's public transportation should have became already green and progressed to beyond the necessity of owning a personal car - if govs impose some kind of tax for public transportation (yet would still be less than car's costs) then they can buy more green buses, mini buses, trams that can get anywhere and some operational round the clock.

The reason why cars still sell well though, even in urban places with good public transportation, is because of prestige (ie. guys want to impress their dates), sadly i don't think this will ever change.

most automobile pollution comes from massive oil tankers and freight ships that are basically unregulated and spew as much toxic emissions as MILLIONS of cars annually.

I do that but I look at the car as though I'm acknowledging the vehicle and not the driver within.
