I have a relitive in Bakersfield who says it's more affordable and that kern county has a good system for helping the needy. I've visted it a few times and it seemed pretty nice there.

I wonder how Alberta compaires to BC.

...OK, now the " get outta town suggestions have gone from implicit " go to another state " to " stay in Cali ". Perhaps someone remembered that benefits in the U. S. can considerably differ from state to state and that, as far as medical care goes, not only is what available in California I believe better than what is available under the ACA-Obamacare, some of the " redder " states in America are actively trying to sabotage Obamacare by refusing to carry out their legal obligations under the existing law!
That aside, I do have these medical problems. I am in the hospital right now over that water weight having ballooned up YET AGAIN and water in my lungs. There's my need to go to the retinologist - eye doctor - as well, although that's been slowed .
All of these problems will remain in a new town. At the least, I'd have to start from square one all over again. That goes for other agency relationship S, too, and the question of " Why did you come here? " !

You should definitely stay put for now.

Apartments in Inland Empire are, for sure, cheaper than the San Francisco Bay area, but at an average of $1200/month for a one bedroom, still too expensive for ASS-P (or me, as a matter of fact).

If you go to Red Bluff or places like that, the apartments are really cheap---in the $600-800 range for a decent apartment.

It's a nice, scenic area. And at the altitude of Red Bluff, it hardly ever snows.

The main problem is probably the isolation.

I saw some places in Rialto for under $1,000. Rialto is in the Inland Empire.

I wasn't seriously thinking about it as a place for ASS-P to live in. I was just thinking "cheap rents."

Fresno also has cheap rents---but the gang thing is big there.

Fresno looks very promising as it has a lot of homeless shelters (27) and public housing spaces managed by the Fresno Housing Authority.

It’s a fairly large city. It rarely snows, but it gets REALLY hot in the summer. 110 is not unusual.

How is your thing going in that artsy place near Seattle?

The winter shelter closes at the end of this month. At that time I'll probably look for a temporary room somewhere and sit tight for a couple of months till a subsidized unit becomes available.

I hope you get it soon.

Housing cost wise? Since we're least affordable, everywhere in Canada is more affordable than the Vancouver area of BC.

The major cities aren't dirt cheap, but their prices fluctuate with the boom & bust cycles of oil. Alberta's whole economy does. They've never learned to diversify much at all. My uncle's house in the suburbs of Calgary is worth $600K or so & it'd be worth nearly double in the suburbs of Vancouver. Housing is expensive in Calgary and Edmonton, but salaries (for those who are working.. bust cycle) are higher. It's more affordable there than here. More rural parts of Alberta are significantly less expensive than elsewhere since there's very little money there except farm work - unless you're way North working in the oil patch out of Fort McMurray, then housing costs can be rather Vancouver-astronomical. Housing costs in the BC interior are skyrocketing, too - it's retirement Mecca for the whole country. Small Northern towns still have reasonable housing costs.. but then you may be faced with ASS-P like problems of accessing medical care etc if you're too remote and the closest hospital is a few towns over few hour drive through the mountains kind of thing.


^Yeah, doesn't make much sense for ASS-P to relocate unless he's able to pre-arrange literally everything.. medical services, a room to stay, social services etc. He might be better off getting a roommate or two in the town he's in & splitting the rent on some place.

Last week I drove my shelter friend to Bellingham. While there, I thought it'd be nice to visit Canada. When I got to the border, the customs man gave me unbelievable grief. He told me he didn't want me in Canada because I'm homeless and would try to stay there. I told him that that was not my intention. After going through my car with a fine tooth comb, and asking me a million questions, he reluctantly let me enter.

I was so angry, I drove into Aldergrove, Canada, stopped at a Pizza Hut, bought a small order of breadsticks, and promptly drove back to the U.S., a visit that lasted less than 15 minutes.
