I don't wear any myself. When trying to work out whether I should the advice was too general and assumed everyone sunbathed, which I have never done. These days there is a more balanced view now in the UK on sun damage v vitamin D deficiency.

If you have to wear sun protection in order to avoid burning (that includes going red, anywhere) then you should wear it as that is what causes the damage. If you can avoid going red in other ways, then you are better off without it. If you decide you need to wear it then watch the vids on putting it on, people miss bits such as ears. Are you white? I have assumed you are in my advice, but as someone else has put black skin does still need sun protection.
