Nationalism is a religion, I grew up religious and people treat their love of america the same way that christians treat jesus. The sad thing is that the religion I left is more peaceful, tolerant, and good natured than nationalism.

I think nationalism can be a very dangerous thing.

The dangerous part is the groups, when people group up, they lose their inhibitions. This is a group that is eager for confrontations and violence. I don't personally know anyone who has attacked others, but I know several who talk about wanting to.

The strange thing is that a lot of people who act like this have the mentality of a frat boy, they love booze, drugs, and boast about their sexual prowess. They just branched into guns and flags.

Patriotism has lost its meaning to me, the crazies can have it. You are conscientious, and you haven't given into cynicism from the looks of it. Maybe you can give that notion the integrity it's missing.

I actually used to have a very negative outlook on life. I'm not sure what exactly it is that changed me but I decided I don't want to be that way anymore.

"Dissent is the truest form of patriotism." That's a quote that has long been associated with Thomas Jefferson, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of solid evidence that he actually said it. Still, I think it's true.

Americans take themselves and everything else way too seriously. Canadians can laugh at their country and themselves.

Yeah true. We are pretty uptight.

No one would deny that the USA has problems--we have lots of them. People just need to get involved in the political process to get these problems fixed. If we contacted all of the House and the Senate and demanded some sort of change, that would help.

The disagreement is what the problems are.

We are ONE of the free-est.

Try criticizing, say, the Turkish president online.

If you criticize the King of Thailand, they can put you in jail. Thailand is considered a relatively "free" place.

Like I always say, the USA is not perfect, by any means.

But when I hear people talk about the USA's "lack of freedom," I always tell them to try to live in a country where they might have to pay a bribe in order to get their birth certificate.

You're right, there are countries out there that are much worse than ours. But that's no excuse for refusing to progress further as a better country for everybody who lives here. It's also no excuse for tolerating the corruption that goes on in our government and our society.

There's no denying the fact that there are certain people in this country who want to prevent others from enjoying the same rights and privilages that they themselves get to enjoy. I'm just going to leave it at that.
