Like others are saying, the hospitals are just looking for their money----and they'll go through all kinds of stuff to get it. The hospitals hire collection agencies. Collection agencies are not known for their compassion.

Just prove that your stepdaughter was on Medicaid----and the calls should stop.

I would call the hospital to start the process.

Many people get billed this way. Your stepdaughter might not have had proper documentation of being on Medicaid when she was admitted. Or maybe she had proper documentation---and the hospital clerk screwed that up.

I can understand your concern, though.

But if your daughter was on Medicaid, you don't have to pay.

My wife received a notice from first the provincial and then the federal government saying she owed a small amount (less than $100) and they will garnish her tax return (with interest) if it wasn't paid within 30 days. I thought it was a scam but turns out the hospital had the wrong address on file and the bill was from 15 months prior. In short, it was unreal the time and effort they spent to "hunt" her down.

I paid the bill since it was such a small amount but made it known there was no need for the heavy handed tactics when ZERO effort was made to call us or track us down. While it turns out it was most likely a legitimate charge, it was a bit scary how they could basically take our money without consequence or providing proof. I can't imagine if we lived in the USA: the bill would have been about $10,000!

I should point out this same hospital has fired a couple of executives lately: one is awaiting trial for fraud and the other (CEO) literally made up his credentials. It took years for all this to come out but God forbid we not pay a tiny amount to them!

What if she wasn't on Medicaid, or if it only lasted through her treatment stay of 4 months? I should just look this up on the internet, sorry. I just can't figure out why they think they can come after parents of a grown adult. We had/have no control over whether she showed up at an ER in early August. We purposely avoid ERs ourselves, because of the expense. If we get sick, we go to our GP between 8-5. I mean if others are held responsible for the actions of grown kids, we could be bankrupt.

But if your daughter was on Medicaid, you don't have to pay.

message disappeared. Thanks KK
