I wish my job would shut down and people would quit trying to proceed like everything is normal. I am hoping my State governor orders all non-essential physical businesses shut down for a time. So we can actually avoid being out in public as much like its recommended we do.

All the states here are going to end up like Italy at this rate.

There are still a lot people denial even our President was is in denial telling people it was the Media hyping things until recently some people still think it is the flu. I really don't care what happens to the people in denial I what I do care are them spreading it and killing other people coming home hugging grandma saying here is the virus grandma

The flu wouldn’t kill all those people who have been killed in places like Italy and Spain.

Well it just seems to me that the corona virus is getting worse and worse, and the government doesn't seem to be doing much for any plan B's or contingency plans. It's almost as if they like that the economy is shutting down, since they just seem to want to sit on it.

And what would you suggest they do? This pandemic doesn't exactly have an easy solution.

Yeah but sitting on it and waiting hoping it will get better is not a solution either. We should try to come up with alternatives.

Move somewhere with no quarantine

Government benefits

Get a job in health care, grocery store, telecommute

Panhandling, soup kitchen,

Live with someone

Homeless shelter

Marry someone rich

Stock market investment

Rent rooms in your house for tenants, income

Gambling

Mooch off friends

Cut expenses

Sell your car,

Gardening, coupons, cheap grocery store

Well as far as moving somewhere with no quarantine goes, where would that be? The virus has reached every in the world it seems now, and I can't just immigrate to another country, on the basis of wanting to escape corona.

It's not waiting, it's stalling. The virus is inevitably going to spread, and nothing can stop that at the moment, so the priority is to make sure that as few people get infected with the virus as possible, both to save lives and to ensure that the healthcare system isn't overwhelmed. This probably isn't going to get much better until they come up with a vaccine/cure, which will take months due to the rigorous testing required to ensure that it works, and that it's safe. All that can be done at this point is stopping the spread of the virus as much as possible.

Hi ironpony - fellow Canadian. You know about the (CERB New Canada Emergency Response Benefit) program that starts Apr 6th? As long as you're out of work for 14 days and aren't yet collecting EI or some other income you qualify for $2000/month until October, taxable. This should keep your bills paid and give you something extra to spend too.

Oh okay, but I'm already on EI now. Is that going to be a problem?

Okay but what I want to know is, is that the FDA has rules, that a new medicine has to be tested for years before it can be approved. So won't this therefore, take years, rather than months?

EI is backlogged so if you haven't received a cheque yet your file will automatically be switched to CERB and $2000 will be mailed by Apr 16th. (I suggest you update info for direct deposit). And then if still off in October your EI will kick in then.

If getting an EI cheque already you can apply a few weeks ahead of when it runs out.

I only make $18/hr so the CERB is actually more than I'd receive on EI - yay! If with being off I'll only pay a minimum of tax on it!

When SARS was around one of my sisters bought Tamiflu (expensive!) - the miracle drug for SARS. If you look it up on the Mayo Clinic website all the medicine does if reduce flu symptoms by a day! It might also prevent getting swine flu. But the most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Helpful? Don't think so - unless you've been around someone with swine flu and not yet showing symptoms.
I won't be a guinea pig for an untested medicine with no stats to back up side effects! My sensitivities already give me higher than normal incidents of side effects.

Social distancing is key at this point! If you don't infect other people flus will fizzle out on their own.

Well that's just it right now... Everyone acts like this Corona is so horrible, which it is, yet everyone thinks it will fizzle away if we just stay indoors and wait. Horrible things do not go away on their own. So why does everyone think it's so bad, yet they have so much confidence it will go away?

They'd probably fast-track it as fast as they could given the circumstances. The estimates I've seen indicate that it'll probably take months, but if the vaccines/cures they're trying out now don't work, it's entirely possible it'll take longer.

The 1918 Spanish Flu fizzled on its own. Right now, depending on where you live, every infected person is infecting 1.5-4 other people. Once this rate gets below 1 the numbers will begin to decline. And survivors should be immune from 4 months-2 years (data is not in yet). It's the same principle that eradicated so many diseases with vaccines. We just need to stick to the plan so fewer and fewer people can infect others. And HOPEFULLY - we can develop a medicine to if not prevent/cure, to at least ease the symptoms in the meantime.

Even with self isolation it can take 14 days to get sick, and then several more weeks to determine if you recover or not. And there are hotpots like seniors homes etc. We won't know for certain if our efforts are making a difference for several more weeks. For now we all need to do our part.

Even if you don't agree with the science it's only 2 weeks out of your life. Stay at home, play some games, garden, surf the web, watch tv, call someone - for everyone's sake! Please, and stay safe.
