That’s how I learned to ride a bike.

Riding on a motorcycle on a highway is different, though. I, as an auto driver, don’t like driving near a motorcycle.

Even before riding motorcycles I’ve opted to be the car behind motorcycles. I do it even more now. I like to get behind them and slow down a little and ease back to give them comfortable space And not worry that some idiot is going to rear end them because they’re tailgating a motorcycle like a total a-hole.

Whether driving or riding, I don’t like being near motorcycles that are ridden unsafely. Jerks weaving in and out of traffic like they’re invincible. F that, get away from me. And better yet, stop doing it.

Or perhaps a 50cc scooter is something he should consider.

I don’t know what the driving laws are in Iowa, but here in BC you’re allowed to ride around on the streets (registered and insured) on a scooter with an engine size up to 50cc with your regular drivers licence - not motorcycle licence required! I think they’re all automatic or semi-automatic; no foot controls to coordinate. They go city road speeds but not highway speeds. People do swap in larger engines and do mods to make them get up to fast enough to do lower highway speeds, though.

Anyways, maybe that’s an option for the OP to explore? Something like my best friend has had a couple of: 50cc Honda Ruckus. Pretty cheap and simple to operate. Not quite the same as the sensation of riding a motorcycle, granted, but perhaps a good transitional step from a car to two wheels. You’d only really have to focus on accelerating and braking (and turning, focusing your eyes where you want to go Because on a motorcycle, “Where you look is where you go,” and there’s a reason we had to say that out loud dozens of times.) and Of Course the easiest Aspiest motorcycle learning technique ever: Talking to yourself out loud!! Heh. Seriously. We were taught this self training technique and some people do it forever - I still try to remember to make it habit. Like a pilot running through a flight check list, if you say it out loud as you do it you stay focused and present and don’t miss anything.

Get a scooter and learn all of those things and more until they all come as naturally as breathing to you And Then consider adding in more power and a clutch and foot controls - which you May be able to practice at a video arcade with a motorcycle simulator game before re-attempting the real deal.
