Why don't people just commit mass suicide if life is so bad?

On the contrary, we are over-saturated with information. It's sorting/filtering the information that's a pain and too overwhelming for some of us.

Because death is infinitely worse. The whole concept of death is far scarrier than anything in life you would ever imagine. So I would never contemplate suicide for that reason alone. I think suicidal people must be really brave to be honest.

People who go through with suicide are usually already in a place of extreme darkness

I dunno. Back in 2006, when they were trying to expell me from grad school, that was complete darkness. But I would gladly go back to that time rather than be now. Because being 42 is so much worse than being 26, that I would rather be in a horrible situation at 26 then in a relatively okay situation at 42.

Its not "grass greener on the other side" phenomenon because I knew as much back then. In fact, when I was told "you can always go to another school" my response was "and then I would graduate when? At 32? I don't want to even think of being 32, thats a disaster".

So yeah. And right now I am NOT looking to being 50. I don't care if you tell me all my problems will be solved by that time. I don't want to get that old. Just. No. In fact, I would gladly take a bunch of new problems IF ONLY I could get 30 again.

Now, why don't I want to get older? Because it gets me closer to death. Now, just think of how much worse would ACTUAL death be.

Most of the ones I have known have been rather more desperate than brave; they could see no other way to end immense pain, be it psychological pain, physical pain, or both.

A couple selected samples:

In early 1980s my Dad became suicidal because of both as his health mysteriously collapsed and ended his USN career.
Fortunately he got through that time. Turns 82 this year.

However, it struck me that George in model train club suicided more out of pride than anything else; he flat out stated that he was going out on his terms before his body degenerated enough that he had to have someone take care of him.
We never have gotten his wife/widow's input on the matter.

You need to accept/reason in your mind that you have no control over your current age.

Getting older doesn't get you closer to death, it gets you closer to expected death.

Unexpected death via disaster, disease, accident, crime, can get you any time, tonight, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, ...

People are always one heartbeat from death, one breath from death.
If the next one doesn't happen, you are done.

I am rather indifferent to living, but I am not suicidal. I would have simply preferred not to have been born at all.

I find it curious how most people would relive their life if it were possible.
An interesting evolutionary quirk.
Once I am out of here, I won't be coming back, voluntarily, at least. ;)

I hate to tell you this buddy, but death is an inevitability unless you are filthy rich and can afford a clone and a mind transplant.

I beg to differ.
I have an older body, but a young mind.

What do they say?

I don't know what kind of madness is causing so many people not to.
