Overall, by most measures of well being, life has gotten steadily better and better for the majority of people on earth over the past 70 years. Back in the early 50s, the infant mortality rate was still around 10% in Europe. Today it's less than that in the 3rd world. In the 70s and 80s there were mass famines. Today there are far, far fewer people in dire poverty.
The news and social media like to highlight stories that get people worked up about how terrible things are. If you listen to them, you'll just hear a drumbeat of negativity. And it's true that there are negative things--but there are also tons and tons of positive things that never get reported on, but are still true.
Yes, I think this is correct. I have my moments, including yesterday, where I feel I can't cope anymore, but in the last few years I've become much better at appreciating what I have and feeling a sense of gratitude. There's a high chance everything could come crashing down in a couple of years and I'm facing a lot of uncertainty beyond that, but you've got to make the most of what you've got whilst you've still got it.
