It happens, the last two were 25,000 years apart, the last 25,000 years ago, but life did not end, or even humans. Those are the ones we know, they hit land, which is only a fifth of the surface.
An ocean hit would leave us with many cultures having stories of a worldwide flood, where only a few survived by riding boats and landing on the top of mountains. By the general timeline, about every five-thousand years, which is when the last one was recorded.
I worry more about supernovas, the last, that formed the Crab Nebula in the 1500s, would have fried my computer. It was short and sudden, Vela-X was a pulsing supernova, many explosion over thousands of years, a pinpoint of light, but bright enough to cast shadows in the daytime.
The Persid and Leonid meteor showers are reminants of two large comets that came through. Both Mayans and Sumarians said there was a long period comet, about twenty-five thousand years, Marduk to Sumarians, and Quezecoatal to the Mayans, the feathered serpent of fire that swims in the sky.
I like cosmic weather. Get a lawn chair, some Gatorade, and watch. There are things we can do nothing about. Most incoming comets are discovered by private people, near the orbit of mars, there are not enough people watching to staff a McDonalds. NASA puts out these stories everytime there funding is being voted on. There is nothing they could do, there is no where to go with current technology, a 1968 Shuttle.
The Mayan long count is ending soon, they said the age would end, from something in the air. Other ages ended in water, fire. This is the fifth sun, age, it will end.
