gawd greentea, anything that old is likely to leak. i strongly recommend you replace it with a lighter model. They're not a super expensive item, compared to a lot of other things.

I checked around, but all seem to be around the 15Kgs nowadays too...

mm I guess it's a size thing, I only buy the small size ones, for reheating or thawing, what about the small ones?

17 liters is the smallest I've seen online, and they're more or less the same weight as mine.

When I had the same crisis with my computer screen (it was still under warranty but I couldn't lift it to take it to the lab), I finally went and bought a TFT screen. They were very expensive back then, but as a woman alone I thought having stuff at home that I can carry independently is worth the huge investment for me. So this time, first thing I did was look for a lighter microwave oven. But they don't make them lighter than 12 years ago, it seems... I have a back problem, so I won't invest in a new one till they make them lighter. I believe it's time manufacturers start thinking that behind every great woman not always there's a young, physically strong man. I'm sure the reason they haven't invested in research to make them lighter is that women alone, like me, shut up and don't complain, thinking it's US who are at fault for not having any man around.

BTW, a neighbor crossed my way when I was struggling with the oven across the lobby. He didn't offer to help. I'll be sure to leave him bleeding on the floor if I ever cross him when he's in need.

computers! that's another one, i used to have a desktop one with the modem inside (fruity apple macs) and it weighed a ton because you're lifting both the computer and the modem at the same time. when i got my first laptop it was a revelation, I've stayed with laptops ever since.

As I recall, they DO make hand trucks with treads that can go down stairs. The idea of kicking the microwave down the stairs is STUPID! You could make a mess, damage the stairs, leave a mess that could kill someone, the noise would be horrible, etc.... and you MAKE it other peoples business when you do that. The stairs are PUBLIC, so they are THEIR property as much as yours.

How did you get the micowave into the home?

I carried it. I was lucky that I was able to drive up the sidewalk, up to the counter of the store! I saw a car there do that, so I did it.

My arms and back are sore.

You know, I always say here that I'm not sensitive to sounds, but now that you mention it, I realize that I usually hit "cancel" before the time is up so that I don't have to hear the microwave's screech!
