I'm sorry we ignored that, ASS-P. I tend to believe you're absolutely right - if you were to be put in a nursing home situation in SF, with limited spending money, then yes, it's unlikely you'd be able to afford to travel much.

My elderly cousin is in a nursing home now, across the country, and I too am sad that I can't afford to visit her. I'm not denying that it's a terribly sad situation. But it's one that many, many people face, and is a reality of life.

As for the horror story - yes, it's a sad reality that abuse does sometimes happen in care facilities. The Ombudsman Program exists to investigate these situations, and advocate for patients' rights:

http://www.sfhsa.org/401.htm

Sometimes it comes down to choosing between the lesser of two evils. My own belief is that being in a care facility is better than being homeless. But I respect your right to make that decision for yourself.

This is very clear, thanks for spelling it out. And you've made this known to your HOT team as well?

I'm so glad to hear your health is a bit better. Hopefully that will tip things in your favor for the shelter hearing. Obviously the best-case scenario would be to get you into a situation as described above - which sounds like the 'supportive housing' / SRO option.

I know it's not easy, and involves waiting lists, and having a case worker to advocate for you, but I do hope progress can be made toward that goal.

I was waiting until you replied to my/our previous comments before commenting on this. Ashariel, twilightprincess, Omniel and KK have been great with lots of helpful info. They're doing God's work. :)

ASS-P, where is your parents grave? Also, where does your brother live?

ASS-P was in a pretty good situation when he has an SRO room. He had total freedom of movement. I don't know how much they asked for rent. Cleaning people were employed to clean his room. The bathroom was in the hall, though.

I hope he gets that again, with an urgent care type of place nearby, and laundry facilities.

He might be eligible for housing for people over 55 with chronic conditions.

What would happen if you had about 200 dollars in spending money every month, ASS-P

...This day I did my more or less final : get-up : about noon .
I had slept through breakfast .
IIRC: I had started to go bed-ish post-dinner ending , at 7:30 - But I think I didn,t turn the light off til, 9-ish .
Aftere that , I think I was asleep a little , then woke up - Then could not get to sleep for a long time , more late-night brooding as I,ve mentioned .
I,ll get into , later , detailing how I DON,T ! have the distractions most people have in situations like these - But I don,t :( .
I did fall asleep finally ,/slept through the breakfast call , slept off and on - Got up , my bladder was calling me , it was noon , I went to the bathroom .
I didn,t have to take a really spectacular poop , or shower afterwards - I di have to change out of those bed PJ,s , into my (one and only) wearable jeans , also gat shirts .
Even with less to do , this was tiring , I,d retreat to the badroom , lie down for a break .
When I cam out fully dressed , it was 1:30 PM IIRC .
90 minutes to wash & dress :( .

...A few days ago I saw someone on Market Street who was really : rambiln, : homeless (presumably) , really : romantically : HL-appearing - A skinny beanpole dressed in green , (Well , maybe .) he had a backback , with a bedroll hanging from it , had a dog on a rope , a skull painted on his pack - and was carrying a banjo ! Presumably he knew how to play it .
Now there,s a romantic : homeless dude : , eh ?
I tend to want to be more like that - If I was residing in the woods , or something - If I ate more raw ,/ or backpack/camping , food maybe my stomach would get better ?
I can,t gigantically/really well play any instrument , however , and my body isn,t , now anyway , up to this - perhaps :( .
My brother is , and my parents are buried in , Westchester , back in New York , where I grew up .
The first week,s
SDI is maybe 70-80% more than the other months .
These last days I,ve gone to that deli and ate , and used their Wi-Fi - This Has To Stop , I grant , but it was even nice to not have to walk so much , it,s just a block up from the Sanctuary and , if my memory is accurate about it having taken 45?? minutes to walk three blocks the other day - Well , that,s a lot  .
From the position I am right now , if I was in a home place next Monday - $200 wouldn,t be very much plus I,n
m being told how I,m supposed to blow a C-note on a cf right now :( . With the vaious cfs I,ve had in the past (generally bought by myself) , I don,t think I,ve even been able to get them to receive phone calls , or leave an : I,m out : message . I have been able to make calls from them . At least sometimes .
I don,t like the idea that I should only , eternally , (Not stated by the person I,m repling to , I guess .) have a : simple : :( phone , to be part of my limitations !
I WANT TO BE PART OF THE MODERN WORLD ! At least reasonably .
If only someone would HELP me there  .
Even if I,m repeating , I thought the Nashville concept could lead me in that direction :( .........

His brother lives in Upstate New York. I would assume his parents' graves are also in New York State.

Thanks, KK.

ASS-P, do you think your next move, when you're ready to move out of SF, should be to Westchester, NY? If you found a place there, you will be within travelling distance to your brother and also your parents grave. Plus, it's a fresh start out of the California educational system.

Westchester County is the kind of place that homeless people avoid. They are not treated too kindly. NYC is a hellhole for the homeless. The shelters there are havens for criminals.

San Francisco is probably better than NYC, in general.

There are lots of criminals in the not-so-tenderloin part of SF where he is now but in general, yeah, you're probably right. I'm just trying to go with the flow and help breakdown road blocks. If not being able to visit his brother or parents grave is a roadblock to getting some real care, then that is a good thing to address.

As others have said though, the #1 priority is finding a case worker who can listen to his needs and set everything up. Something we can't really do online, as unqualified civilians in other states. How ASS-P can do that himself, though, I don't know. I think a proper read of page 11 is in order, lots of useful info there. :)

My husband was set up with a case manager after a stint in a psych ward. I'm wondering if a regular MD from a community practice could point him in the right direction. A counselor or psychiatrist certainly would.

Also, he'd be able to probably access services through his insurance, but it would take some googling and phone calls.

If he gets a cellphone, he can call his brother.

You need to see if the HOT team can help you more, and you need to find out whether you can have a case worker or not. They are easy to keep in touch with if you keep your appointments and call them when you need to once you get a cell phone.

Way down the road when you have a stable housing situation, you should get a sleep study done. You probably have something like sleep apnea that's messing with your sleep pattern.

...As I,ve said , a cell phone would be a very large outlay .
The one I had pre-the lost card had been one .
I,ll say more later on this and about my past experiences , both with an Obamaphone and bought ones .
I mentioned , IIRC , those CDs someone up NW has , who claimed she couldn,t find anybody to MP3 ,em :( .
During 22013-15 I did some buying like that/,/of what were meant to be seeds/foundations of libraries/my bookshelf/whatever , things which never happened  . I thought I,d have ,em in my new place , maybe keeppp them in storage first - I lost some , deposited some with others .
I have mostly broken myself of that , of getting such : permanent : things - I sort of : think homelss : now , don;t buy : for keeps : books/pubs (Though II might slip sometime) , just things I say I,ll throw away someday , mostly - Even for an old/2nd-hand book , just something with throwing it away in mind , not being on a shelf of mine .

ASS-P has been reluctant to accept this option in the past, as it would likely involve the Public Guardian managing his money. I think it's true that some of these care facilities (nursing homes in particular) would budget all of his SSDI money toward living expenses, leaving only $15 a month for personal spending money.

So I'll be looking into that some more, but if anyone is knowledgeable about 'residential care home', 'assisted living', or 'nursing home' facilities, please enlighten us on this issue!

holy crap $15/month, when my mom had to go to a nursing home she got $60/month (I'm not in California), but she wasn't competent to make decisions for herself (she had Alzheimer's), so that's why I was her representative payee.

It's like one of the circles of hell, you're sick so this one and that one can't take you, but you can't get into this other thing...I've often wondered whether the process is so difficult on purpose...the longer they drag it out the more likely someone will give up and go away. I know getting my mother Medicaid and nursing home admission was VERY difficult and she was purely out of her mind, didn't know what year it was or even what city she lived in. So that's not ASS-P.

I'll keep looking around, my brother had an accident with my car yesterday and I've been dealing with all that so only come on in the middle of the night.

My brother has a case worker also, but he got his through the community mental health network here. This worker deals with his Medicaid and psychiatric appointments. He spent about 6 months homeless in Los Angeles last year, he came back here because it was so difficult to get situated in California. He's living with me and is working, he doesn't get disability (denied as always).

Tobes, it would take us a million years to tell you why our system is so broken here in the US.
