I've seen these sorts of reading glasses for under $10 sometimes. Sometimes about $19.99 or so.

Just "try them on," to see which ones fit you best. If I had to get reading glasses, I would be at about a 2.50. There is 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00, 2.50. I don't see over 2.50 too often.

We call those bargain shops "cheapie shops" And we call Thrift Stores, "Op Shops"

I remember buying a few pairs of reading glasses from them, before I got my prescription glasses.

Maybe there's some Bargain Stores in Santa Cruz, that sell extra cheap reading glasses, ASS_P?
Within walking distance, so you could buy them before your curfew?

ASS-P can also enlarge the text size on his phone to be more readable.

I'd post a video that shows how, but he would just yell at me.

I would suggest going to the library and have one of their tech tutors show him how, but he would just lash out at me and try to make me feel stuipd and guilty.

Being The Haven, I did wonder if this was a thread for ASS-P to vent, rather than seek help..

I'm a new member, but have been reading these forums on and off, for years. I do remember some of the past threads. I was hoping that somehow, things would be a bit better for you ASS_P.

EzraS, you're not stupid, nor should you feel guilty.

People really do mean you well ASS-P, even if all we can offer is advice and hope.

This is his zillionth thread of this kind. They have all basically been the same as this one. Many of them have ended getting up locked. He will drop this one and start another which will be just like this one. Check out his posting history and go back 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 years ago and you'll see. Back when WP was more populated he would have around a dozen people sucked in and each thread would go on for around 40 pages. It's got to be one of the longest running routines in internet forum history.

All ASS-P wants is an apartment where he can stash his stuff, and have a halfway comfortable bed so he could read his books and post on forums.

Along with a bunch of other things, like prescription glasses, and then makes anyone offering suggestions on how to get them sorry they tried.

People have been posting info for years on getting a place. He has never indicated that he has ever tired any of it. Never indicated that he's ever put himself on a waiting list going back several years. Like I said he has to actually seek out a place before he will get one. There are several low rent buildings for low income people in my town, that people on welfare, SSI and SSDI live in. I suggested those types of places for where he lives and he shot down the idea.

It would certainly make it easier for ASS-P. That's for sure. ASS-P has to be diligent in seeking this, though.

I think with all the info of what is available posted by Redrobin alone, if he had gotten on a waiting list, he would most likely be in an apartment. He does the squeaky wheel thing here to the Nth degree, but apparently not in real life where it would actually get him something.

...While Ezra heats up another attack on me, let me say that a couple of hours went by since my last post above, O guess - Immediately after that O posted another, I lost that draft after it was COMPLETELY finished it and I posted it and I lost it .

For non-prescription glasses...I use them. I am wearing one now. I have more than one. I know that I have mentioned this! Thank you for the thought, though. I buy more expensive Foster Grants, they're more durable. Especially now that I'm back in SC, it's Walgreens' again and again, the main store downtown - 2.00.

...Okay, briefly...An hour of free Wi-Fi in a Subway is running out, no time to re-check what I posted...This morning. the shelter staff demanded I leave the table all of a sudden...Then, a follow-up post was completed and posted and LOST! Ezra days that my getting the LP player instate shows I can get anywhere easily, end of discussion. I had a Ride!! !! ! ( for which I had to pay) Earlier this week, yet another phone was stolen , and replaced.
Above, it see.s to me that the syndrome of, if a suggestion is made and I respond with trying to talk about the details. or, yes, mention a possible problem...The narrative of a response of " YOU JUST DON'T WANT TO BE HELPED! I WASH MY HANDS OF YOU! " played out .

OK. NOW I'm beginning to get a fuller picture of ASS-P's financial and mental situation. Previously, I'd asked if he was getting SSDI or SSI. KK answered that he "thinks" it's SSDI. ASS-P, in the past, has been a little vague about it. He finally just stated it's SSDI. Why is this important to know? He gets money once a week from a NY lawyer. This would be referred to as a Representative Payee Assigned for Social Security Disability. This happens because Social Security will appoint a representative to receive his disability checks if he is mentally incapacitated or addicted to drugs or alcohol.

By this arrangement, with ASS-P not having full control of his own finances, it'll be extremely difficult for him to find an apartment on his own since he'd have to come up with first month and deposit monies which he probably doesn't have. In other words, any apartment he gets would most likely have to come from a social service organization in Santa Cruz or elsewhere who can work with his Representative Payee on his behalf.

tl;dr

If I was aware of ASS-P's financial & mental situation, I would've linked to nothing and just let Social Services do that do that they do so well.

You live in an environment that does not allow you to sit anything down, or forget it. It will not be there when you get back. That leaves 3 options: 1. come up with ways to stop losing or getting them stolen ( the eye glass chain suggestion, getting something so your phone is attached to you, or stuffing in in your clothing ) 2. Get on a waiting list and get out of there 3. Stay put, don't change anything and just use this forum to vent about the neverending cycle of being victimized.

With all the money you've spent on replacing phones alone, you could've had a decent pair of prescription glasses.

I remember one place in Gainesville, Fl. It was an low income apartment building. It operated just like an apartment building and you got on a list for it. It took a while to get in, but at least there was the hope of something better. The transportation was public or walking. You do all this stuff for your self now, already. So, you do not need to rely on some owner of something to do anything for you. But you somehow convince yourself that these people are there to serve you in ways not related to activities of daily living (food, bathing, toileting, grooming), they aren't. They are not there to transport you anywhere, if they do offer, you'd better believe you're going to pay for it.

Nothing is discounted... If you want to get your stuff from the storage facility, you'd be better off paying movers. If you try to save money by talking the "Daniels" of this world into doing you a favor, for less money, you are going to get hosed. I've known a few homeless people in my day, they survive on ingenuity ( a form of scamming ), so they can smell a scammer from a mile away. If you stop thinking you can talk someone into doing something for a lot cheaper than a moving company, you are less likely to be disappointed. The Daniels of this world want something from you, the same way you want something from them. My best opinion, the moving job was a lot more costly than $100, especially with gas prices in California.

Get your name on a list, start saving your money. If you have to, get some velcro and stick your glasses to your chest hairs and your phone to your forehead. I'm sorry, but we're all running out of suggestions to keep you from losing these items. If you stop replacing phones and start saving money, you'll have quite a bit stashed by the time your name comes up on the list.

My sense tells me that he sort of gets on social workers' nerves sometimes. And that makes them disinclined to help him.

I sense that he feels like he's sort of "selling out" if he "plays nice" with social workers. He doesn't quite trust them.

I don't know this to be sure---but I sense this is what happens.

I suppose I should research this a little more----pertaining to apartments for people with chronic diseases. Or for people on dialysis in California.

I'm thinking that if he could ever get a place of his own, Medicare would provide a medical transport bus for a copay of $2-$3 (it may be more in California) to and from doctors appointments. It's not fun waiting on medical transport, they get there when they get there, but it is reliable transport. I don't know if they pick up from shelters though.

In Santa Cruz, there are for-profit medical transport services like Freedom Medical Transport which operate 24 hours/day, 365 days/year and will pick up from anywhere. They're a little pricey.

In ASS-P's impoverished state, he'd have to rely on Metro ParaCruz, Santa Cruz's complementary (low cost) Paratransit. Their hours of operation are between 6AM to 10:30PM. Typically, since most doctor's appts are during the day when shelters are closed, and reservations with Paratransit have to be made one day ahead, it'd be of no use for someone who cannot be picked up during the day in a shelter.
