I believe what you are saying, sly - that people aren’t taking it seriously there at all. But I still find it bizarre. There’s a global viral pandemic of a novelle virus that can be lethal to humans and they honest to God think it’s fake news? Do these people not have an internet connection to be able to see the news and warnings coming from other countries like Italy and Spain? Or to see updates on the crisis that’s unfolding in NYC or about to hit hard in New Orleans? Wtf?

And it doesn’t just kill old and disabled people. Nearly half the people in American hospitals with it are 18-40something yo males, many with no underlying conditions.

Also, with the prevalence of existing conditions in America that make this worse.. like obesity, diabetes, and smoking.. you’d think people would take extra precautions because there’s a rather large % of the US population that’s at increased risk of being hit hard by this because they’re just generally unhealthy already... which is all part of why I honest to baby Jesus believe that the American death toll is going to be catastrophic. Unhealthy people + zero trust in science and public health officials so they’re not following orders to distance and take precautions = it’s spreading faster and farther in the USA than anywhere else on the planet right now... and when a LOT of people get sick at once with only a handful of ventilators to save them, well, that’s when mass casualties really begin to add up.

If there behaviour really is as stupid as you describe, that’s what’s coming. At least do all of the things within your control to keep yourself and your home disinfected. At least you know what to do to personally protect yourself, your home and household.

Death toll isn't the main damage or risk-

it's what happens $$-wise because of numbers climbing and hospitalisation during treatment escalating burdening an already overwhelmed healthcare system to breaking point

That’s true for most of North America, so far.

I find the New York death toll rather alarming.

Yes, the economic impact will be great.

I don't know what cons would be in that approach, for them. Maybe it would still affect the economy

The solution is for us to be a great nation, and seek to help New York out of this. We New Yorkers would be helping if some other state was in our situation.

And we should be sensible and don’t travel to other places except in emergencies.

I would take the sociopathic viewpoint OUT of the equation, and put it in the garbage.

I hope you all have noticed (as I have) that while the hardest-hit cities have the highest populations, they also have large populations of homeless people.

Are homeless people carriers of the disease, or are they just as likely to be victims as everyone else?

I know what the sociopaths must be thinking.....and it’s not something that deserves consideration and airtime.

Homeless people are probably both carriers and victims.

What has caused the supply problems so far is lack of centralization of medical supplies—like ventilators.

States in the US were on their own, and it was “their problem,” to procure supplies.

And don’t even mention the lack of COVID19 tests kits!

In my experience there are only 2 ways to convince someone to help when they are being heartless and are likely sociopaths:
1. Threats eg prosecution over criminal negligence
2. Convince them of how THEY will lose out. Play to their value system.

I have always had horrible anxiety and whenever something bad happens it goes up past eleven. Nothing has worked. Medication, therapy, distracting myself. Nothing. Since the world isn't going to change for the better, the only escape is death.
