Oh man, I hated my antidepressants. I was on 3 of them before. I felt so controlled and emotionless. It's hard to explain. Luckily I'm down to 1/2 pill now. I hope I never have to get back on any more.

I have taken antidepressants for about 1 1/2 years. It is true they work, you notice the change a lot. But...

They have side effects, horrible side effects. So i advice you to ask your doctor about them, and remember that they are for real, right now i regret the day i started taking those wonder pills.

I cannot give you any more details, i wish you the best luck.

I've been taking anti-depressants for almost a year now.

I started off with Zoloft, which I had an adverse reaction to, so I switched to Lexapro and took that for a long time. It did nothing for me, so I recently switched to Prozac. And honestly, I haven't noticed a thing. It helped with anxiety (so if you have anxiety I recommend it) but my depression has actually gotten worse over time. So my advice is this...

If you're not really tight on cash, try it. You have nothing to lose. But don't get your hopes up. The first thing you try may very well not work, but it's worth a shot. All the meds I've taken have been SSRIs (the usual antidepressant kind of drug) and if Prozac doesn't work out for me I'm going to be upgraded to the "good stuff" as a bipolar friend of mine says. So even if you try a few meds and they don't work, don't worry too much about it, because they have more hard-core things that might work for you.

As far as side-effects go, I've only ever had one. The Zoloft gave me heartburn, which the doc didn't tell me could happen. So make sure you ask your doc what ALL the side-effects are and if you start to see any of them try talking to your doc as soon as you can (especially if it's a painful thing, like my heartburn). As long as you know what might happen, you can stop it before it becomes a problem and you won't have to worry.

So I say go for it. There's nothing to be scared of as long as you're informed. I hope it works out for you.

I am against anti-depressants. When I was diagnosed, my doctor put me on Prozac. I stayed on that for about a year, maybe a year and a half. I got switched to paxil when I was 16 because of the side effects. THe meds basically suppressed every emotion I had, until one day I had such a severe panic attack in my guidance counselors office, that he thought I had taken acid, and called my parents. So my doc switched me to paxil. I didn't like it and refused to take it.
When I was approching the end of my pregnancy they put me back on the paxil. They thought the postpartum depression was gonna be pretty bad. They were right. When my daughter was 7 months old I had a major breakdown which included me trying to kill myself. Now I will never put another anti depressant in my body again.

I'll admit that I've taken Paxil,Remeron,Lexapro over the course of 7yrs now but, not at the same time though..Personally, I've felt that some of my sleep troubles might be due in part to taking Lexapro however, I can't confirm this as, I feel there might be other underlying variables to explain this.Still, anti-depressants can work for some people and have no positive effects for others as, it's a gamble in some ways..Yes, continue to take Lexapro nowadays but, with little side effects..

It has been a long time since I have been on anti-depressants, and I do not have the money to throw around to waste on that sort of thing (not that I would even if I did have the money)

I remember Zoloft may have made my depression worse, and then when the doctor upped the dossage, it made me tired.
I remember effexor made me horny, but did not actually do much about the depression after a while.
I remmeber prozac was effective. I stopped though because I pretty much had my life under control.

No amount of anti-depressants could actually make me focus in school or care about having a big social life though.

If you want something that works instantly on depression, you would probably be better trying the Thelema ritual "The Star Ruby" OMG INSTANT RESULTS ROTFLMAO!

Let's see:

I've been on Effexor twice -- once in 2007 when I was feeling suicidal and was beginning to write up personal wills and information on when I died, where to find everything, and I'm on it again today for depression but more for generalized anxiety disorder. My dose will likely be going up again in a month.

I've been on Oxyzapam for muscle relaxants and some sleep assistance, but I quickly adapted and built up a resistance to it and had to keep increasing the doze, something I didn't want. I went into withdrawal, which remains absolutely awful. I'm only starting to feel normal again after a few months of torturous pain and bad stuff in the withdrawal.

I've been on Zoipclone as a sleep aid, which has been remarkably effective in getting me to get a good night's sleep.

I've been on BusPar for anti-anxiety medication, but that was pretty useless.

A lot of legal drugs here, not to mention the illegal ones I've taken, which are considerable in length and usage.

i've been on at least 10 various bad anti-depressants, and for the last 2 years i've taken 10 mg of lexapro. no complaints as far as that goes. might even stop taking them, don't really have a use for them anymore.

I take citalopram currently. I have taken it on and off for the last 10 years. I currently take 20mg per day but I have taken 40mg per day when things got really bad in my marriage (I am separated and geting divorced because he was an alcoholic). They work well for me.

When I first took them I found that I did have side effects for the first 3 weeks which then gradually subsided. Taking them made me jittery and wired, so I had to switch to taking them in the morning rather than the evening so that I could get some sleep. This side effect went away quickly. I found that I got dry eyes at first so I had to use eyedrops for a week or two. I also had a problem with anorgasmia when on the higher dose.

However with consistent use I have got much better and I can deal with life well again (I can get very depressed and don't cope well with standard functioning without them).

Some antidepressants work well for some people and not well for others - you really do have to find the right one for you.

Yes, this makes a great amount of sense for, I've been using Lexapro now at 10mg and have found it to be helpful though, at one time it was at 20mg and it tend to be negative in results..Anyways, your statement regarding antidepressants working for some and not for others is quite accurate..Thanks.. :)

I have tried a few different ones in the past. I can't remember there names but I do remember their effects. One made me so anxious that I couldn't handle myself. Another made my head feel like concrete and others said I looked drunk all the time. The worst one of them all was when I had severe short term memory loss. I often had no idea were I was and I was failing every class in school before I stopped taking them. I will try a new one sometime in the future but with what happen in the past i'm a little weary.
