Maybe part of the reason a lot of people don't tell anyone about their suicidal intentions, is because they don't want to be attacked for how they feel. Seems like if you attempt or actually commit suicide you're selfish and pathetic according to a lot of people.......But if you mention it before you attempt to try then you are a attention seeking selfish, pathetic idiot according to a bunch of people. Either way people will come up with ignorant things to say about the whole thing......but one way you're dead and don't care, and the other way you're living and peoples assumptions only bring you more pain.

But that is just a thought of mine, figured its a possibility....I don't exactly want to tell everyone I know that I've been feeling suicidal for over a week. I know what they will say and I don't feel like dealing with it.

Yes, if only they really show their concern when we tell them, really find a way to help us rather than just scolding us for such stupid decision, then I think chances are, we may feel we must take the chance to talk to them before we do this silly thing. We would like to have more concern shown but it might not happen. So that is why most people who has suicidal thoughts just won't tell. What's the point to tell them? Get more humiliation, feel more lost.

For those who actually want to know the answer to the question, here are two resources that answer it.

Suicide Myths - Youth
Suicide Myths - Adult

The second one provides statistics to answer this question.

I never had a real problem with people believing me when I told them.

I did have a problem with people who I told I was killing myself and not putting in any real effort to help deal with the problem properly.

Let's take my dad for example. Two times he learned that I was suicidal and made a couple of attempts and both times he tried to sweep the problem under the rug with classic parental discipline. His approach to suicide prevention is to say to me "I dont want to hear another word about you wanting to kill yourself, you hear?!" That's it. It's his penny pinching approach to dealing with my problems instead of paying hundreds of dollars for therapy.

And then there are my peers and friend who dont really laugh at my suicidal talk or anything: they just give me a weird look and tell me I need therapy as if they were a regular Sherlock  What the hell do you think I've been trying to get my parents to do for years???
