I don't think anythings black-and-white. I'd say most people who are successful at something do work hard, but they also have had talents and/or opportunities that others don't have. People generally work hard at things they already have talent for because that's motivating. It's not very motivating to work hard at something you don't have a natural ability for.

Also, it's a f*****g hell of a lot easier to work hard at something you find intrinsically satisfying than something that's meaningless drudgery to you. I mean, a business owner may put in 12 hours plus hours of work in a day because it's his/her own business and something to take pride in. Take that same person and force them to work all day digging ditches and cleaning toilets for someone else and they probably won't be seen as such a hard worker.

I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so down about this, hale_bopp. I can relate to both sides of this, as I've certainly had some success, yet there are others who are much more successful, and still others who haven't had any success at all. I learned that worrying about how much success others have (or don't have) isn't going to do any good, as it is a sure-fire way to quickly drain positive and creative energy, which leads to depression before very long. All that any of us can do is keep doing the best we can, and take things one day at a time. That's the best advice I can give you for now... hope it helps. :)
