Interesting thing, it's not the pills itself that make you gain weight, it's the side affect of the pills that trick your brain into thinking you are hungry so they send you false hunger signals. Hunger is hard to ignore so people give in and eat so thus the reason why they put on weight from their medication. I think it's just slang when people say pills can make you gain weight, same as when people say you get stretch marks from weight loss when in fact they were already there but they only appeared when you lost the weight because your skin shrunk so now you see them where it had been stretched.

Yeah, I've been on mirtazapine for years and they do really work for me but I absolutely crave carbs now whereas before I was on them I never ate bread or potatoes. Its a good thing I cycle about 100 miles a week or else I'd be the size of a house.

Is there an antidepressant that will actually reduce my appetite?

You may want to try exercise. I dug up a couple shrubs today.

Yes: fluoxetine. When fluoxetine was first discovered, Lilly (the pharmaceutical company) actually considered it as a treatment for obesity. But then a window of opportunity arose in the 80s amidst growing concern about benzodiazepine addiction, so they decided that marketing it as an alternative to benzos would be the most lucrative option (David Healy, 'Let Them Eat Prozac') - even though the German FDA-equivalent expressed serious reservations at the time about its effectiveness for depression.

I'd think very carefully before going on it though, unless you're asexual/celibate, because it causes genital numbing and can sometimes do so on a permanent basis - even after stopping the drug (see 'Post-SSRI sexual dysfunction'). Also, it is known to make people more likely to attempt suicide due to the akathisia (anxiety, restlessness and overall inability to relax) it can cause. The FDA now requires black box warnings on fluoxetine, stating the suicide risk for patients under 25.

The prozac also made me exhausted

For different patients, prozac has different side effects

Carefully read the instructions, before taking prozac or any other medications

Prozac costs $$

Taking an antidepressant for the sole purpose of losing weight seems like it could have side effects you do not need or want

Cost benefit analysis

I've got money but I'd prefer an antidepressant that increases my energy so I can work harder.
