The evils of slavery aside the fact that it was Americans killing their own countrymen was pretty damn sad if you ask me. I heard that more Americans died in that war than any other war we fought.
Southerners owe a lot to President Abraham Lincoln because most of the north wanted the captured confederates executed for treason and we were pretty destroyed after the war thanks to union soldiers burning down our towns and farms and leaving us to starve. He decided not to have us executed and made plans to rebuild the south as long as we rejoined the union (which we did). He was a good man.
That's all way in the past. Let's hope we never repeat a stupid war like that ever again regardless of the reason.
