I feel very disillusioned about my country
Yes I am
There are two newer movies I admit I really loved: In The Heart of the Sea and Bohemian Rhapsody.
On bluray I currently have Night of the Living Dead, Carnival of Souls, Nosferatu, Bohemian Rhapsody, In The Heart of the Sea, Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, The Others, and The Craft.
I'm hoping that I can add Mary and Max and Carrie (the original one) to my list soon.
Blaming "the country" for creating criminals is probably wrong in most cases.
Vegetable Man is one pissed-off dude----yet even he believes in the redemption of our country.
I would never purposely do anything to go to prison, but our system has been proven to screw many people over who don't deserve it. Just ask the huntreds of people on Death Row who were proven innocent through DNA testing. What's worse is that some of them don't even get released after being proven innocent because the DNA evidence can't be admitted as new evidence. Oh and prosecutors often times will hide evidence that might prove a man's innocence just to win a case against him and we house more prisoners than any other developed country.
So yeah, I'd say our country creates criminals. Our criminals can't stay out of prison because our system makes it impossible for them to return to society after they get released. They can't find any work for one thing and they are denied assistance from the government so how in the heck are they expected to survive with no support? The lucky ones might have family with money that will help them out.
I think our country is so far beyond redemption.
well in russia they say, prison is a forge of crime cadre. if u survive it, ofc. and u might not. think of it, u guys are getting disability support for autism, and around here i cant get as much as a diagnosis. usa might be a total b***h in politics, but it does look out for citizens more than we in russia can imagine for...

beware the ire of the patient ones!
and if i walk away, who is gonna stay? i believe to make the world be a better place.
Yep. We have to fix that. We have to fix a lot of things.
If the DNA proves that those now on Death Row didn't commit the crimes, they shouldn't be there. Period.
But the criminals also have to prove that they can be trusted again. Would you, as a store owner, want to have a convicted thief at your cash register? Would you want a convicted wife beater to be with your daughter?
Probably what would be good: we could have automatic expungement and sealing of past criminal history after five years if the person was convicted of a nonviolent felony or misdemeanor. Canada has something similar right now (people can get a "pardon" 3 years after a (equivalent) misdemeanor conviction, 5 years after a (equivalent) felony conviction.
You're right, but I really hate the idea of having a government that looks out for me by doing sh***y things to other countries. Like the Banana Republic BS. Every time my mom buys bananas for our house I think about the people living in those countries like Guatemala who are starving and malnourished living off nothing but beans and tortillas while our big fruit companies exploit the resources from their lands to sell us bananas and force them to live in these homes literally made of trash.
How am I supposed to not feel guilty knowing that? Especially when there is really nothing I can do about it. I'm practically a second class citizen myself.
It's not YOU that's causing the Guatemalans to live off tortillas.....it's partially the policies of the "first world," partially Guatemala's own fault, and partially things which are beyond any control.
We are lucky to be Americans. But I don't feel guilty for being an American. The Guatemalans would think it would be foolish for us to feel guilty about their plight. In their minds, if they get a windfall, they won't feel guilty for having that windfall.
I feel like we should acknowledge their plight; but at the same time, I'm not going to feel GUILTY. Because I didn't cause them to eat only tortillas.
Just like I feel bad that the Native Americans were annihilated through various means by their European conquerors. But I'm not a European conqueror---not am I even a descendent of one. Why should I feel GUILTY? I'm NOT culpable in what happened to them.
I am a Jew. I'm not going to blame present-day Germans for perpetuating the Holocaust. That would be ridiculous.

Well you're not me. I know that I myself am not directly responsible for the atrocious things my country has done, but I am still very ashamed of my country. I mean just like every other young American I was raised on that fake American ideology about how our country is all about truth, fairness, equality, and all that other crap which simply is not true. How our country was always the "good guys" and every other country was wrong even if they were our allies.
Our country has always been unfair to certain kinds of people and that still goes on to this day. We're also a country that allows the rich to get away with almost anything. They can afford better lawyers and many of them have the right connections to get away with all kinds of bad stuff.
And you know, I could maybe forgive all of that if it wasn't for the Americans who either live in denial about how things are really done here (saying absurd crap like "Racism isn't an issue anymore!") or admit that they simply don't give a damn as long as things are good for them and bad for everybody else.
Urgh... those types of people are the worst.
Our country WAS founded on you mentioned: truth, fairness, equality, etc. It was the ideal which the Founding Fathers strived for.
However, to say the least, we haven't followed the above ideal----which is an ideal we should strive for, rather than just dismiss just because we don't achieve that ideal.
I reiterate: we should keep striving, rather than just give up.
I'm not one of those who believes "racism doesn't exist" or whatever. I know it exists. It stares you in the face.
I work in the criminal justice system in my city. I can tell you how they mete out justice in my city. I can tell you the economic toll of even having a misdemeanor record in New York State. There is no expungement in New York State. Once you have a criminal record, that's it---it's there for life.

Yeah, a bunch of rich white male protestants who took this land away from the native people by force and introduced slavery and made it illegal for women to vote.
Only later did we decide that maybe we should have the same freedoms and opportunities for non-WASPS in this country but obviously there are still some people who are against that sort of thing.
