Animal Control was called to the area. But I don't want the dog to be killed. I would feel terrible about it because my own dog was put down a few days ago because he was old and sick. I'd hate doing that to another family. Believe it or not I am actually capable of compassion.
As am I, my compassion is for the other people in the area who are forced to take an out-of-control dog into account when planning their activities. If it's gone after you, who's to say it won't go after other people? What if the next person isn't able to extract themselves from the situation, not everyone is able bodied and big enough to fend off a dog.
I have a degree of empathy for the owners, but they have a responsibility to keep their animal under control. Perhaps this is an aberration, in which case responding the way I mention isn't suitable. But, if it's an ongoing issue that they choose to neglect, it's fair for somebody to fix the problem. Perhaps the family will put more effort into controlling their next dog.

Just a reminder: under international law, an occupying power has no right of self-defense, and those who are occupied have the right and duty to liberate themselves by any means possible.
