I hope the lay-off doesn’t last too long.

I hope Congress enacts the stimulus bill soon, so you will get at least $1,200.

Yeah, I'm worried. Most of my family, myself included, are in high risk groups. Lots of friends too as well as most of my neighbours (this building mostly has elderly.)

I'm not that worried about the financial effects on my family; mom's a nurse, so she'll have enough work to do during and after the epidemic. She can also support dad finacially if the need comes. Lil sis lives off student debt and such anyway. Half sis is a former nurse, so if she were to loose her current job or something she could easily find a new job even during the crisis. I have an office job that I'm currently doing from home and I should have enough to do at least for a few months if needed, so I too am secure for now. The one I'm worried about is my older sister. Normally, she's the one who's the most financially secure out of all of us with her three jobs and good health, but all her jobs are the kind that can't be done from home and need customers, so all three places are in trouble. One has shut down already, and the other two probably aren't far behind. And she still has an apartment loan to pay off...

Folks with more money can panic buy quicker I guess.

Folks with more money can afford to panic buy in the first place; there are many people who barely get by during a regular situation, so they can't afford to stock up on anything even if the stores are full. :|

^ Yeah, that was subject of discussion at dinner yesterday: after a bit my wife asked ”so wartime rationing was to reduce class division and the accompanying antagonisms?”
I replied ”that and ensure that the government could keep the army fed”
We did a panic buy last weekend and it was basically just buy one months food in one go... and worry about the rent later 8O

(Luckily our landlady is lovely and has rung Mrs K yesterday to say if/when lockdown comes we’re not to worry about the rent.)

Less liberal in a generic sense and more liberal in an in-your-face sense since the turn of the millennium, yes.
But I think “authoritarian” would be overstating it a bit.

Despite generally authoritarian tendencies of my current government, they didn't tighten their grip at the epidemics.
We - as a nation - have very bad associations with things like police hour or military on the streets so if they tried it, they would make sure people would hate them and fight them.
So they politely ask for cooperation in the name of solidarity with vulnerable ones.
Works way better than the alternative :D

That’s good to know: your country is one of the ones I have concern for on that front!

Polish culture is better adapted to surviving crises than to peaceful, prosperous existence :D

Based on what I see on WP, I'm more concerned (and, honestly, also curious) about how more traditionally capitalist societes survive it.

USA is more concerned with business profits then stopping the spread so we probably will get a lot more cases and deaths. Every business says their essential. My state closed parks and campgrounds but nit retail stores where people are maybe half inch apart crammed in lines. I’m sure thst won’t cause spread.

From a previous post: <<Polish culture is better adapted to surviving crises than to peaceful, prosperous existence>>

Now that's a fact. The Czech part of my family is crazy when they hear about the "soft approach" from the Dutch or British government
In the "east" they are under national quarantaine, and here in the west our children don't go to school, school is closed; but instead the school yard is full of playing children, playing soccer and so on; or people buy ice creams in the shop

The trouble is that with the "soft approach" the ER's of hospitals are getting fuller every day; in the south of the Netherlands hospitals already have an emergency: full
PS: I must admit that we in the West might be good in peaceful, prosperous existence, but that doesn't count nowadays

Tardiness afoot here too: it’s only been today that the government has mandatorily shut down all pubs, bars, cafes, theatres, cinemas and nightclubs.
Hospitals in London are apparently overwhelmed and on the brink of ceasing to function.

@Grischa: I know, in this country it’s almost like we’ve spent so much time congratulating ourselves on pulling through the war uninvaded that we’ve forgotten how to get through a crisis.
Taken our own resilience for granted.

Honestly, Sly, that really worries me. Do you really need to get to the point where Italians are to sober? There are more important things than money!

And only three days ago

Quote:
On ITV’s This Morning, presenter Philip Schofield asked the prime minister's father if he would still go to the pub despite his son’s advice.

“Of course, I’ll go to a pub if I need to go to a pub,” Mr Johnson replied.

 when is this country going to learn that entrusting governance to the hands of an isolated sub-culture of privileged superficial inbreds doesn’t work :wall:

I feel sort of feverish....but not really that sick. But I’m not taking chances.

I’ve had a “cold” for the past week. Last night I started getting chills and slight fever.

Keeping both sets of fingers crossed for you.

Trying to stay far, far away from this thing as I have asthma and can have pretty good coughing fits on a bad day without it. Work is paying me to stay home this week and next. After that, we take online professional develooment courses for our normal hours and get paid for that.

Staying home except to buy groceries and fix computers for people I know. I have sanitizer in the car. After that's gone, I have isopropyl, peroxide and glycerol. Have food, have toilet paper. Shaking my head at capitalist hoarding. Stores earlier this week looked like the Eastern Bloc in the 80s. What day do wipes come in? If I have Party connections, can I get some now? *shakes head*

They will learn, we all will learn much in the next few months. We haven't yet grasped the magnitude of this pandemic and how it will change the way we live.Arrogance will be replaced with humility and regret, nature is fighting back and teaching us a painful lesson.

Thanks very much.

The Eastern Bloc impression, as you know, is caused by people hoarding.

Believe it or not, a company that makes toilet paper was able to restore a building that burned down last year...and are now making toilet paper in three shifts.
