I guess it’s better to have spunk than to give up the ghost.

I disagree!

If what you're doing is affecting one's mental or physical health then one should give up the ghosts. If what you're doing is affecting other people negatively then one should give up the ghost.

You disagree with the Wolfman???

Tsk tsk tsk....

Seriously, I was talking about ASS-P’s situation. What do you think I was talking about?

Isn’t it better to have spirit than to just waste away?

No, not waste away but quit pursuing things that are a detriment and unrealistic for you. First, I think he needs to quit the whole college thing. Second, either get a locker or burn most of his stuff like GF suggests. Third, concentrate on getting better. That should be priority one. Priority two should be to get some kind of shelter even if he stays at the hospital for a while. Priority three is to save up your SSI money and get a laptop. Try to save up about $100 per month and quit eating at McDonalds.

Maybe ditch the college thing.....but I wouldn't burn things from his brother.

If he can get a steady place to live, and stabilize his health, who knows? Maybe he can enroll in a class.

I just find the concept of "giving up" to be abhorrent. It gives me the heebie-jeebies.

It reminds me of a time, when I was 19, that a bunch of us were hanging out in an abandoned car. We wanted something to eat---so I went to a grocery store and got some canned tunafish or whatever.

Turns out---there was no can opener! And I was broke, so I couldn't buy one. So we couldn't eat.

I said to myself then: I need an effing job, for crissakes!

What about giving up things or pursuits that aren't doing you any good and or causing more difficulty than they're worth or distracting you from focusing on more important priorities?I think that's the kind of giving up or really letting stuff go that's being talked about.

I know of one person who has taken basic Chemistry about 4-5 times trying to get it. He wants to get into chemistry. How much has he spent trying to get the material. Now, let's say he finally does get it. Don't he think the next class will harder? And, how many times is he going to do this class? And, how much is it going to cost him? Point is, when the cost (financial or otherwise) I don't agree with mainstream thinking. I think one ought to call it quits on a particular something(s). Even Sun Tzu said it's sometimes better to retreat.

I don't agree with the idea that one should never give up.

Here is another reason.

Look at this guy King Krimzon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZNKGvLWJhY&t=5s

His pursuit of his dream to becoming a murder rapper is costing his family tons of money and stress. Should he continue to pursue something and "never give up on his dream?" When is enough, enough? Even ICP says he sucks. Why pursue something to your detriment even if it is your dream and passion? Why would one continue to do something that is not benefitting you at all and is harming you?

I suppose, sometimes, when something is futile, then one must "give up" on that. But to "give up" on life. That's abhorrent.

I never said that one should never "give up" on a specific thing. I would say that one should replace what was "given up" on, though.

I once took a sign language class, and had to drop the class; otherwise, I would have failed it.

What I find abhorrent is a whole philosophy based upon "give up."

Once a person takes Basic Chemistry 4-5 times, one usually gets enough of a grasp of it to advanced to more "difficult" classes.

I have taken many "introductory" courses which I have found much more difficult than more "subsequent/advanced" courses. I don't believe it's a truism that "basic" courses are "easier" than more "advanced" courses.

I've had Grad School classes. They were easier than their Undergrad counterparts.

Part of the confusion of this conversation is that it seems cubedemon6073 has no idea what the phrase "give up the ghost," means. cube, it means to die. To give up the ghost means to allow the ghost or spirit to leave your human body. kraftie was saying it's better to persevere and have attitude etc (spunk) than to just give up on life (literally) & die.

I used the concrete method once while on a day hike just to see if it worked - and it did! Quite easily.

I am definitely one of those "NEVER GIVE UP!" kind of people who will persevere through anything. It irritates me how easily others give up on work, school, health, fitness, goals etc. It's not that I've never ever stopped the pursuit of something in my entire life, but in general I'm not one to just quit at the first sign of difficulty - especially not over the last 6 years.

Introductory college courses try to cover to much ground in to short a time. Advanced classes are much more focused. At least that was my expirence in school. Also you are learning it from a professor who likely has had years to organically grow their knowledge of the subject.

One of my hardest classes was minerology. Mostly because there is a huge step up from the brief intro you get on the subject in Geo 101 and the specific minerology class. Brute force memorization attempts got me nowhere, so I went to the professor and asked him the best method to learn the material. His reply was that the course was a first stepping stone to really learning the subject, and that real aquisition of the subject would come with years of practice. So I stopped worrying and just did the best I could. He was right.

I'm hoping you have good insurance. Most hospitals charge around $10,000 a day for an extended stay. No, I'm not making that up.

he is considered indigent. that means the hospital makes somebody else pay. that is our system, like it or not.

Its OK, im actually in favor of a more socalist society. I'd pray for him but I'm not a spiritual person at all.

You're right dude I didn't know. Thanks for telling me. What I was saying is ASS-P needs to focus on his health first. Ditch the college idea, find himself some shelter, part with most of his brother's stuff, forget the mineral royalty thing. Make sure his ID is current. Save up a bit of money to get a tablet or laptop or better phone. He has disposable income if one thinks about it. Oh, ASS-P should lay off the McDonalds.

Hmmmm wow, I can provide objective solutions for ASS-P but can't solve my own s**t. Why is that?
