Serious coronavirus thread. No deniers
These 3 families that had it already live in different parts of the UK.
Wow
Im glad they are almost on the other side of the virus n no hospitalizations I guess
Thanks, there was just a trip to the doctors where my aunt was seen in her car and given antibiotics, she two or three auto imunne things going on with her and suffered the most. I recommended a UV air filter as recommended by Jimmy M.
My niece fell off the trampoline and fractured her wrist, so she went in to hospital to have her arm seen to. See has had a temperature of 104 but she had tonsillitis as well. My mum was in the hospital for two weeks with something else and actually IN the covid ward. She was discharged 1 week ago. It was nerve wracking waiting for her to be released, 24 people died while she was in the ward including the doctor who first admitted her, but somehow she didn't get it.
How are you and your kids doing?

Fake news!
My father’s cancer metastasized a few years ago. He’s had a few rounds of chemo and radiation and a couple lung surgeries. He’s 66 and was a smoker for 30 years. My mother is also 66 but lower risk factors. My dad was still working a week or so longer than me, in a pretty low risk environment luckily, but still.. we all worried about him. My mom told him to stay home and he’s stubborn and wanted to finish the job he was doing. I texted and told him to stay home because I understand the severity of this. Then I texted all my siblings and sister in law to text him and tell him to stay home. Then I think I texted his siblings, my aunts and uncles, to do the same.
If I get this while out shopping for essentials for our household and bring it home, I kill my dad. My work, social and sex life is on complete 100% pause. I rarely leave the house and when I do I’m careful af and then when I return clothes get washed, I shower up, every item brought into the house gets disinfected etc - the whole decontamination protocol 100% of the time.
I was out for a 16km walk to deliver Easter chocolates for kids and booze for adults at 4 different households (maintaining proper distance) on Sunday and caught up with my 12yo Godson and his dad out for a walk omw home. It’s only been ~4 weeks since his 7 months pregnant mom, my first cousin, was killed in an early morning T-bone car accident. 12 years old and he’s the one who made the phone call to tell me his mom was just killed. We haven’t been able to have a funeral because of C-19. That’s the first time I’ve seen him since it happened and because of social distancing I couldn’t even give him a hug.
Don’t you f*****g tell me I don’t understand how serious this is. I just choose to see a silver lining bright side in all of this Great Pause instead of letting it drive me nucking futs.
Speaking of bright sides, another couple months of not f*****g pretty little gay boys at every opportunity and I’ll be legally eligible to donate blood for the first time in my life. Part of me wants to stay angry and say “F you, until you remove all of the non science based discriminatory rules, you can’t have my gay blood.” But another part of me says “But cancer kids don’t care about anyone’s politics. They just need blood.” So, I’ll probably do it if/when it’s safe to go.

My dad’s pretty healthy and strong right now vs how weak and low his immune system was after the first round of chemo, but still.
I have plllllllenty of things to do to keep busy or entertained. Way more options than most people have tbh. But mostly I’ve been suuuuper lazy and having a laugh hunting and sharing all the funniest memes on Facebook - which have largely been Tiger King memes for the last few weeks or so.. which are also entertaining my isolated & quarantined Facebook friends. It’s nice to see in the notifications which of these stupid memes made which people laugh.
Some of these stupid things have been so funny I’ve laughed so hard I could barely breathe. ![]()

I'm glad for your dad and that the rest of you have a decent level of independence. I'm hoping my sister's can get tested and visit sometime.
I'm SORRY for everyone I have offended, I'm really not myself lately, this scary crisis has gotten to me and anxiety disorder IS a thing you know. I am freaking out so much, that I'm spending a lot of time scraping the internet for a bit of reassurance, to give me a glimmer of hope somewhere. That is usually my way of dealing with things. But I cannot see any silver lining in this, as it is impossible to allow lockdown to go on for 18 months, that is like an eternity and people won't want to do it. The government can't keep throwing out free money, so that will lead to people being unable to pay their rent and bills and half the population would be living on the streets. Then how will people be able to self-isolate?
I'm sorry but lockdowns going on for 18 months is not humanly possible, so I don't know how anyone can say that it won't be that bad. Believe me, lockdown for another 18 months is sure going to cause a LOT more harm than this virus ever will. Whoever wrote that scary article must either be millionaires with no money worries, or living in lala land.

The past forty years have been a sh***y time to be a scientist. When the baby boomers were growing up the ratio of older people to students was much higher, so the cost of doing research and development could easily be hidden. You could teach classes and do research and nobody cared how much time you were spending on your pet project. Now it is much harder do to research since there are far fewer students. And those former students now want to be scientists, so there are many more people who want to be scientists. It often takes years of work to see the results of R&D. Nobody wants to wait that long. So smart people waste their time chasing grants or funding for their work. Or working on profitable stuff the marketing people want. Lots of rare disease research programs aren't funded because it is obvious you can't make a ton of money on something that only helps 10,000 people.
I graduated with honors from a top school and couldn't see myself chasing research grants for a living.

Tons of articles like this over the past few decades.
Thing is, if you solve those rare diseases, you might very well have the magic bullets you need to solve this pandemic in your arsenal. But management types trying to get rich don't care about that.
I do wish I was clever and could find a cure for this plague.
I often used to wonder why the bubonic plague and other diseases like that haven't been around for decades, and whenever I've asked the answer was always "well nowadays we have advanced medical technology". So I was able to relax and be thankful for the medical technology we have in the UK (and some other countries).
But if these science people are more worried about money than they are finding a cure quicker then I guess they deserve to suffer the consequences.
I'm heading for a breakdown and I can't help it. I do wish people would stop sharing such scary s**t on Facebook. It's no good saying "limit your Facebook use" because even if I did I still have the same chance of seeing the scary posts whenever I log in and scroll. But I need Facebook to keep in touch with the outside world.

Scientists have bills to pay like everyone else.
And, its not like you can do this sort of research as a hobby and work in a grocery store for your day job.
We have folks on the spectrum here that can barely manage part time grocery store work. Never mind trying to juggle two full time "jobs."
^ Yeah, the idea of the scientist working on their own research for the love of the job & good of mankind is largely based on the “gentleman scientist” of the Victorian era: most of them were very rich guys who could afford to do that.
Contemporary scientists have to get funding from either corporations or governments (occasionally charities) to afford to have a workspace, equipment and pay their way.
He who pays the piper etc.
Hey, a lot of scientists do love their job!
But - it's a job. Something you do full time and make a living of it. And it often requires equipment no regular person could ever afford.
Unless you're Elon. He affords his research and even makes money of it. But medicine is not his field.

Andre Geim claims, after getting IgNobel for levitating a frog, he got recognizable, thus getting more grants, which eventually led to his Nobel work with graphene.
You never know

My suspicion is most of those really weird ones involve the team of scientists having to “strange up” the research they want to do out of love of the work, in order to get corporate sponsorship so it pays as a job.
I'm sorry I don't know much about how the science scene works. I thought scientist was a career involving high-paid people working in labs. I didn't know it was a chosen hobby by lonely geeks living in their parents basement.
I just wish the flu jab would have some good effects for coronavirus. Yes I do KNOW that flu jabs won't cure COVID-19, I've heard that enough times. BUT viruses like flu and COVID-19 only basically kill you if it develops to pneumonia in the lungs, so you'd have thought there would be some sort of flu jab that can at least stop the pneumonia.
But again I'm no medical expert so what I've just said is probably laughable. I'm just desperate for some answers but nobody knows nothing and that is what's scary.
