When I was a teenager, I had a cat who understood I was depressed.

The kitty used to go on my chest, and lick my face.

I am glad that you did not act on your suicidal feelings today, but I am still sad that you feel this way. I wish there was something more I could say or do to make you feel better.

Do you ever feel depressed during the holidays, or do you get in to the Christmas spirit? When I was a kid, I always loved Christmas, but now I always get depressed when Christmas comes. I wish I did not have to celebrate Christmas any more; I feel like I am too old for Christmas.

By the way, I still have a working VCR, and I still use it sometimes. If I was near you, then I could get your VCR operating again.

I can still give you 300 big hugs.

I'm kind of the same way with Christmas - I too loved it as a kid, but now it gets me kind of down, I guess because it doesn't feel the same as it did then, and I miss that. I ended up watching The Nightmare before Christmas on Netflix (which I hadn't seen before) and cuddling with my dog. It helped some, but now I'm back to feeling down.

I'm sorry you're feeling so down. I am too at the moment. It seems like you are trying to find out where you fit in life, and so am I. Maybe I can give a little perspective. I'm really upset right now because I'm in school for physical therapy and just failed something major. I don't want to make this about me so to make a long story short, I'll get some intervention from my physical therapy teacher and than I'll be able to move on in the program. But my confidence is majorly diminished, and I'm extremely distressed. I see that you cut yourself when you get upset, I bite my right index hard to the point where it causes an opened wound and callous on the opposite side.

The reason I'm telling you this is because, over two years ago, I was looking for a job I could work at while raising my son. I looked at the list of options and chose to become a physical therapist assistant. I got into the program with hard work, and now I'm at the end of the class portion of the program. I looks like I won't end it in a pretty fashion, but it looks like I'll get through and actually begin working with real patients who need physical therapy. So I'm working extremely hard, I'm sometimes succeeding, and I'm sometimes struggling.

So what I'm trying to say is that you and I have something in common. We aren't square pegs that fit into a square hole. We're round pegs, and we have to stuff ourselves into that square hole. My advice is to do something like I did. Look at a list of options and pick out a job you feel you'll enjoy and you believe you can do, even if it will take a great deal of effort to do it. You have a degree in Biology, so you obviously are capable. (Incidentally, two of the students in my program have Biology degrees.)

I think it's a matter of finding out what your passionate about and than pursuing it with the goal of crossing the finish line regardless of what place you finish in. I hope that advice helps, because it sure as hell is the advice I need to be taking for myself...because I ain't gonna finish my program in first place, that's for sure.

Yes, I do think a large part of my problem is finding a place where I fit in life. I just have to find something I thoroughly enjoy and am at least decent at. A lot of hard work definitely gets people places faster than trying to find an innate talent. And you're right, what matters most isn't what place you finish in, it's that you cross the finish line. Thank you very much for the encouraging words.

I'm really not sure how I'm doing tonight. On the one hand, the images I get aren't all about me killing myelf, but on the other they're all about pretty bad stuff anyway. Anything I try to use as a replacement image is corrupted. I see there images every time I close my eyes.

dear dragon, I am very new to this forum so I have over the past few days read all 31 pages, starting at the beginning. My heart cries out to you and others who have written they feel the same or similar. I've been to many of these places over the years and remember how devastating it was. I can still make an initial plunge for one reason or another, but it is easier to get out now. I'll just say a few things...anything I say you can take or leave...whatever you do has to be right for you.

I am about a generation and a half or maybe two generations older than you are. I have a son and I have raised foster children. I have friends whose adult children have killed themselves. I can tell you there is nothing that hurts a parent worse than that. I know there are parents who don't give a damn about their kids, but your parents seem to care and they would be devastated were you to be successful in your attempt to kill yourself or even hurt yourself. Parents don't talk to well to adult children because we don't know what to say. As a mother, I can tell you that I would do anything to keep my children from harm or hurt. It sounds like your dad doesn't know much about aspies. I wish I could explain to him why sometimes you can't talk, why windy days bother you, why it is not a matter of laziness.

I found with myself and with others I have know, when it is all bad it is impossible to see a way out and what things we do do for ourselves, suggested by doctors, friends, therapists, family, etc, don't seem to make a big difference. In my experience, that is because so much is wrong, so much is out of whack, that getting a tiny part right has only a little impact. Little by little, you can bring things back into balance, normal, whatever your word is for when things are right. So all those little things you have done over the past months, posting here, walking the dog, cleaning house, etc. keep doing them. Keep adding up those little things, get a medication array that works for you, and you will move forward. In my work I see a lot of people with more profound autism being treated with medications. What I have seen is that some meds work for some people and some meds work for others. You have to find the right med or med combination for you. After decades in this field, I also know that meds go in and out of fashion. So one year, all the psychs are prescribing one medication and another year it is a different one. It takes a lot of patience to try to find the right med and unfortunately many psych meds do not show an effect right away. You might want to consider asking your mother to talk to the psych doc because I have also found that other people are sometimes better reporters about how the individual is doing than the individual. I say sometimes because, say for example, I try a new med and I still feel awful so I tell the psych the med doesn't work. But Mom might say: but Honey, you've been smiling more this past week, didn't you notice?" Other times, mothers aren't so helpful. You have to decide.

Now, here's the part which is my expertise. If you are diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum and have the problems you are having, finding a job, finding housing, etc., then you likely qualify for many programs that could really help. For example, did you know that Vocational Rehabilitation will pay for your training, should you decide to be, for example, a physical therapy assistant, as singledad did? VR can help get you a computer (if you can't talk, you need a way to communicate), VR should assign you a job coach who will help you put together a resume and help you apply for jobs. The job coach can even provide transportation for you to and from the job interview. The job coach can also assist the employer to understand the accommodations you may need, such as working in an area without a lot of other people, and help the employer understand your communication style. A few years ago, there was even a program where VR paid your wages for the first three months so the employer got free help to give you a free try. I don't know if that is still going on or not. The point is, there is a lot of help available.

I don't know how good VR is in your state, but in my state, frequently they are not very user friendly. If that turns out to be the case, then you call your state Disability Rights. Each state has one. They are funded by the federal government and all their services are free. If VR is not providing you with the services they are supposed to, your Disability Rights advocate will help you get what you need. They are also a good source of information about what programs and rights you may have as a person with a disability. (Sorry, that is how the NTs see us...)

You are also likely eligible for the Developmental Disabilities Waiver. Usually there is a wait list and the wait list is years long....but once you get on, you will have a coordinator and other services to personally help you reach your goals. If you are not already on the waitlist, get on it now. You can always change your mind later.

If your community has public transportation, there are usually two programs which permit people with disabilities to ride at very low cost. So you could look into this for your transportation problems. And by all means, get your driver's license. You can do the written tests online now in most states to get your permit. Then you just need to find someone to go out with you and let you drive. Starting out in deserted parking lots and then moving to low traffic areas early on Sunday mornings are good places to start learning to drive.

Enough for now. Take what you need and leave the rest.

Sounds like there may have been some improvement even if you are still having horrid images.
Keep plodding my lovely. These things can take time to change.
I need to go to bed myself soon.
I always feel as though I am leaving you when you might need a friendly ear.
Keep faith in yourself.

You're under a lot of stress. You're overwhelmed. The fear center of your brain is activated, and it's providing you those scary images. I'm not a big promoter of drugs, but sometimes when things get that bad, you might want to have some medication designed to calm you available. I have some Clonazepam that I got filled by a psychiatrist in 2009 and I took some last night when I was very upset. Obviously, I don't do this too often, but if you are not prone to habit forming addictions, this can help you calm down and rest for a little while.

I know things are very tough, but your brain is also psyching yourself out. It's hard to ignore, I know! Yesterday I was every upset about my school and today I emailed with my teacher and was basically told it aint all that bad, we'll just do a review and than I'll move on to the next segment of my schooling. Before that communication, I had irrational thoughts about whether I'd be allowed to continue and whether I deserved to continue. You are afraid you won't find your place in life. It might take longer to find your place than many people, but I'm confident you'll find it. Maybe you'd make an effective social worker and have the ability to help others out. Who knows, it just has to be something you have a patient for. Stuff that round peg in that square hole! You do that by dreaming, and than you put that dream into effect and make it a reality. Nobody said I'd be easy, but I think you'd find it will be worthwhile.

Looks like I'm headed to the hospital now because I wasn't sure I could be trusted alone tonight.

I am very sad & sorry that you have to go to the hospital. Perhaps you are doing the right thing. I am sure that you will get the care that you need. I wish I could send you a card or flowers to say how much I care about you. I will miss hearing from you, but I fully understand that you have to go. I will be thinking about you & hoping that you can come home soon. Good luck.

300 big hugs.
