There are some people around here I'd just love to sit around a fire with, on a nice summer night by a river somewhere, and have a drink, share war stories from our time down in the trenches ... you're most definately on that list, AB :wink:

I think autistics are gifted, just not always successful because they are misunderstood.

The original poster made a very good observation. An autistic learns only by a conscious thought process rather than a mindless automatic process. This is of course a slower way to learn but a conscious learning process is a much higher way to learn and opens the door to discovering ones true genius.

IQ definitely goes towards being able to learn a talent or skill......you cannot ignore that :) . The only thing that is never learned is common sense. Either you have it or you don't :wink: .
I have worked both with and for some very bright people. One gentleman had an IQ of 142. He wanted to get into MENSA badly, so he re-took the test as often as allowed until he made it in. He was quite content with that. Point being, he was happy accomplishing this, as he felt vindicated in saying he was smarter than so many people. That's good and there is absolutely is nothing wrong with that.

I know that would be impossible for me, I am terrible at taking tests, I just freeze up.
I have no idea what my IQ is and it wouldn't help to know it, considering the work I do.

yeah, I used the word "useless" as in the brit meaning, ie equivalent to american "clueless". I didn't mean that they are useless as human beings, I meant "when ti comes to operating a computer they are useless".

Well I don't really know what my IQ is......but from what I gather I am quite intelligent. I have to say though it does not seem to do me much good over-all. I couldn't think my way out of the ptsd, depression or anxiety and those things interfere a lot with my functioning......In fact part of the issue is my brain is always going I always think about things and analyze things and then get even more frustrated and anxious about them.

So yeah I don't really see myself as 'gifted'.

I once read this put in a way that has really stuck with me. Look at a baby learning to walk. They're constantly falling down. What if they were so afraid of falling that they never tried? Only the puppy and kitten mills make great money - and that's because they're neglectful and abusive in their shortcuts. Who wants to be them?

Do it for money, do it for love, there's something you love and are good at. Maybe not THE BEST IN THE WORLD. But how many people are? That describes a handful out of 7 billion! Good grief, none of us is that delusional that we think we have to be THE BEST, are we?

It's nice to get recognition, I know, but sometimes self-recognition is the most important thing. It's the least likely to make you feel like a fraud. :)

Sweetleaf, the bold section describes me to a 'T' . I actually started a thread about it over in the Work section because it's affected me to that point.
I have only been on here six months or so and your posts have shown you are quite insightful 8) :) .
I am certain you are intelligent/gifted or have an untapped talent.
Perhaps, like myself, you have not found your "niche" in life. Maybe we should create one :wink: :) .
