judging by the number of McCain bumper stickers and yard signs, at least my local neighborhood part of mason voted overwhelmingly for McCain. and if a person wants to stay safe here, a person who is considered an outsider even though I've lived here since 2008, that person would be smart to keep as low a profile as possible and pointedly not try to get to know the locals. just having a long ponytail marks me for harassment by the locals.

Oh come on these people are your neighbors not the KGB. What are they like?

older white mostly retired, mix of working class and middle who live on opposite ends of the neighborhood- mixed with a smattering of younger latino, most of whom live in the working class side and speak little English. the two groups don't mix. I wish I spoke Spanish so I could at least converse with them now and then. and yes I have been harassed over my appearance. this place also is a dumping ground for ex-cons so there is an element of physical danger. I carry pepper spray with me for that reason and also because of abundant uncurbed nasty dogs that won't respect my physical space with their snapping teeth.

precisely one, who actually helped me out. he's an older fairly wealthy retired fella, who wants to sell his spread [he owns one of many vacation trailer spots out here] and move to a condo in the city as he can't keep up with the physical task of maintaining his property anymore. but he saw that some yahoo knocked over my mailbox, no way with my back the way it is could I have fixed it myself [woulda had to wield a pick ax bent over close to the ground, duck a deep skinny hole, hefted a heavy 4 by 4 post and such] so he kindly fixed it for me. I think he sees that I am weak and needy in a grandfatherly way, I must remind him of somebody in his family. he has the straight dope on all the other neighbors and told me all their stories, some sad. he is probably the outlier in the working class end of the neighborhood, he disliked the other neighbors as much as I do.

Mason county sounds like the stereotypical conservative area smug liberals think of. So what’s the story of this area why did it come out like this?

I have no idea other than that religious people of the Calvinist bent also tend to be wealthy. wealthy people tend to be conservative, and wealthy people tend to want to retire in picture pretty places of which mason county is a picture pretty place with lots of fancy waterfront properties. so that may be at least part of the reason they accumulated here, that is my best SWAG.

he is very private and does NOT want visitors to his locked gated property. I watched a row between him and a game control agent and it was profane and loud. we chat now and then when we each go out to pick up our mail.

thank you friend :flower: I think he feels a bit worried about me. it is a quasi-avuncular or parental relationship, like a grandfather to a grandson [albeit an overgrown one].

heavens no! I am as non-religious and non-wealthy as it is possible to be. but I am an under-class new age liberal which makes me the diametric opposite of the lions' share of folk here.

Might very well be at this stage. But if it is your intention to go and talk to him a little more I'd say do it. He doesn't seem particularly judging.

no, I went there because after checking out over a hundred properties through multiple agents, it was the only affordable property I could find that didn't require carpentry skills to bring up to habitability. IOW all the others in my price range [under $75k] were wrecks or didn't have their own land underneath them [leased properties]. that was all the money I could beg/borrow/steal to buy a property to live in, at the time of my parents' deaths I was their caretaker living in their house. when they died I had to move so the house could be sold per probate. couldn't afford to buy it as it was worth more money than I had ever seen in my life until then. if I had any other financial choice I would have lived either in Olympia or Sequim or Port Angeles or Ocean Shores, Washington state. but those were all too expensive.
