I'm glad to see you are still around. I don't know anything about the tax or benefit system in Canada, so I can't be of much help with that, but I think one way or another you might benefit from a companion. There are a lot of people your age who are lonely and just want someone to talk to and keep them company.
And these possible companions are hiding where, if you please?
A lot of single men your age who are retired stay active with clubs or volunteer organizations or attend senior oriented events. In my area, gem and mineral clubs/lapidary clubs, model train clubs were populated almost entirely by older men. The same was true of the gardening club. It's also not unusual for single older men to frequent cafes or restaurants for breakfast or maybe dinner, and a lot of men your age still like going to watch bands play at local venues.
My volunteer work is usually editing on-line and I'm good at that, but the hitch is money. I don't want any, which screws up people's estimation of what my work will be like. My favourite is to get an autobiography from Guru (minimum charge $25) - they are fascinating - people think their lives were so dull! W
I wasn't trying to send that.
Obviously volunteering on-line is not a way to meet people, except you, of course.

So, to getting out. I'm disabled and introverted and rarely go anywhere. But of the things you mention - first - lapidary? Are you in Australia? Just a guess.
Model trains - I love that! But it's not so much the trains, it's the villages. I would love to build mini-scenery.
Cafes for breakfast - just my style, but they're tearing up the streets and the cafes are gone! This area used to be cafe heaven.
Oh, there's a chess club somewhere - they don't care if you're any good or not - I'll check that too.
Thank you!
ambitious but sleepy

I'm not in Australia, I am in the U.S. Lapidary is male dominated for some reason. I suppose because of the craftman nature of it, and it's a way for men who like jewelry and fashion accessories to endulge in that in a socially appropriate way.
Anyway I am sure many men would be happy to have you as a companion or activity partner. I find older men are also usually receptive to conversation and small talk and just being acknowledged in general...especially by women. I would also check to see if your area has a senior center or anything like it. The one in my area hosts a lot of events.

That's a good suggestion. Our senior center has many good programs, from age-appropriate exercise, to health check-ins with a nurse, low-cost beauty services, free movies, card games (not my cup of tea), massage services, meals, and social workers to advise on benefits. They also have classes in art, two different music groups, and free day-old bakery items to take home. Even a person who is introverted can gain a lot by dropping in.
