Addicted To Suffering.
I wonder how many people each of us knows who can't seem to hold a conversation on any topic that does not involve their personal tales of woe and misery. I wonder how many of us want to scream at them to shut up whenever they start reciting their version of the "Go Eat Worms" song...
Oh, Nobody likes me, everybody hates me
I think I'll go eat worms!
Big fat juicy ones,
Short thin shiny ones,
Chewy, chewy, ooey, gooey worms!

My own choice has been to just not engage people who either made it clear that my opinions and advice are not welcome, or I just reached that conclusion by myself. I wouldn't want to see this turned into a rule though and there's been enough drama in the past with people reporting others merely for posting in their threads.
My question is where do we draw the line? I imagine Fnord (as well as myself and quite a few others) for instance would qualify as "staying afloat". Nevermind that the man has been through hell and back, through hardships most of us will thankfully never know and in my own opinion that his experiences might be useful to some: for the sake of this argument, let's leave that aside and say his contributions are useless or at least unappreciated. What should we do? Ban him from posting? Make a new rule that anybody who has achieved any success or progress in life shouldn't post in the Haven? Ban any kind of pragmatical or concrete recommendations? Especially since, in all honesty, he and other "successful" people have also been actively helpful and supportive and openly acknowledged as such.
And people who come across as more or less having their life together, who don't complain much, rant, make threats of suicide and stay articulate enough get almost no support when they make their own threads in the Haven and are often derailed by posters dismissing their suffering and claiming they have bigger, more significant problems. Just like offline, lack of overt, loud emotion is seen as lack of emotion.
What really bothers me in this thread is the attack on Ezra. He is not staying "afloat" by any means and he never made a secret of his problems, even if he's not complaining much. He didn't make this thread saying "y'all are a bunch of junkies that should be blamed and shamed for your problems since you enjoy them", and yet it seems this is how some people chose to read his post. The irony is priceless, since Ezra has neurological and physical issues much more severe than most of us, that affect drastically not only his quality of life, but even his life expectancy. He never was and will never be able to live independently, have a job or a family and a lot of other things that many people here either have and take for granted or at least have a chance of achieving. I have no doubt he'd get a lot of sympathy and support if he were to post here more about his struggles: but he doesn't and on occasions is even suspicious of sympathy if he perceives it as pity or condescension. Apparently this makes him an acceptable target and since he isn't vocal enough when in pain, it's fine to claim his attempt of exploring a hypothesis about his own and other people's problems is "disgusting", accuse him of arrogance, "dehumanising" others and hugely ironically again of talking about things he doesn't understand or know. And this is not a pissing contest on my part about who has it worse, I'm just trying to put things in perspective and remind people that those who don't want to be judged shouldn't be so quick to judge others and make extravagant assumptions about other people intentions or (lack of) struggles.
Yes, this should be a community and especially in the Haven it's sad to see posts motivated by personal grudges and dislikes. Those who function better and had certain advantages in life shouldn't dismiss and look down at those who don't. But there are also those who post here regularly about their issues and actually get a lot of emotional support both from the membership and (some of) the mods and their own struggles are not - in my opinion - an excuse for solipsism, personal attacks, or angry, unsupported assertions and accusations, while claiming they are the ones being bullied
Sorry in advance for my rant, it's not directed at you, Bender. I just might be having a conversation at you, but I'm guessing you will be tolerant of this.
I dont honestly know how the mods do this job unpaid, have said it before, will continue saying it.
It bugs me something fierce when people take them for granted. THEY'RE AUTISTIC TOO. Using up their time and energy with petty schoolyard issues is unbelievably INTOLERANT of their natural way of being. It will lead to a high turnover, its unsustainable. Can we please learn from past mistakes... I've no idea how Tallyman, Cornflake, GGViper and XFG managed to stay well in themselves.
Is no one else except the person in crisis allowed to be Autistic... that attitude is TOXIC for this site.
The solution is a top down piece imo.
If the mods aren't allowed to be their natural autistic selves on this site, or if we expect them to mask what message are we really sending out about the ethos of this site? Its wrecking my head tbh.
This ethos says to me that I cant be my autistic self. Not doing it anymore, been quiet long enough, sick to my back teeth of the intolerance being fostered through practices on this site.
Not going anywhere, just finding my voice.
That really gets on my nerves.
Perhaps that is because what is suggested is too easy. Not enough of a struggle and drama involved. Just make a phone call or just go to certain place or talk to a certain person is all that's needed? No way that's just too simple and therefore a bad idea. How dare you minimize my ordeals by them being solved in any way that's easy.
Then the thought occurred to me that perhaps they are addicted to suffering. So I looked it up to see if such a thing exists and came arcross quite a numbers of articles on the subject. Apparently it is an actual phenomenon.
This is a list someone came up wth of 10 warning signs that you are addicted to suffering:
To put simply the advice I'm usually given is overly simplistic and pat answers. The people giving the advice never consider other factors including that I may have followed it or followed something like it before and it did not work.
I don't want you to console me. What I wish is for you is to sit down with me and break things down to me. Not only the what but the reasoning behind it.
This is one example of what I said before. How do I have control over how I feel. I don't get the logic.
Do I focus on everything in my life or is it that the things that are wrong in my life impact me in such a major way that there is no way to not focus on it or I have no idea on how not to focus on it.
How do I have control over my life in an absolute way that is claimed here if others control their lives as well, make the policies, rules, guard the doors and hold all of the keys? This whole idea that I control my life and my circumstances are determined by the decisions I made make absolutely no sense. And, this presumes I fully understand what my options are and I am mentally and physically capable of executing an option.
How do we tell what is outrageous and what is not? How do we tell what is one's fault and what is not?
If there are a pattern of bad things happening during the good times in my life then how are those times in my life really good? I don't even get this at all.
Why does it matter to you whether I take it personally or not? But, if something happens to me and personally affects me then isn't it personal? I don't follow this train of thought?
Why does it matter whether I forgive myself or not? Why does this logically matter?
What if I think that the whole concept of gratitude is a form of thought control. If gratitude means someone else has to suffer for one to have this gratitude then how is gratitude morally right? Look up the story Those who walked away from Omelas.
What if at times one is a victim of circumstance or things beyond one's control? Like being robbed, raped, mugged, murdered, etc? If this is true why have police, justice system, prison or even laws?

Isn't this the forum where those addicted to drama and suffering come to refuse to accept anything that might resemble useful advice?

This is a rhetorical question?
I'm always open to responses to my smart-ass questions.

It's The Haven, it's Ezra, let's be nice even if it is a hot button issue for some.
Our mods do a great and generally thankless job. Let's not get down on them.
While some people seem to thrive on the attention received for being constantly in crisis, there are actually people suffering when something bad happens.
The ability to rise above catastrophic bad things happening is largely individual.
In any case, this is a first world problem.

One thing is what is allowed, another thing is what is wise.
