Bad times usually don't last for decades, only a couple years at the most.
The last corporate job I had ended 25 November 2001, since then most jobs I qualified for were shipped overseas. I have since trained in networking (college, struggling, student loans) only to be passed over for foreign students and h1 visa holders from India and China, even though I had a higher gpa and related work experience. Since I was repairing pianos as a hobby, I started apprenticeship tuning, now the economy is so bad that the middle class are throwing away acoustic pianos and buying low budget weighted keyboards, in spite of the poor performance records and differences so that field is fading before I can even build a decent customer base. almost 12 years now of "bad times". my student loans debt keeps getting bigger as I struggle to buy fuel, food, monthly utilities. and according to all the NTs and some professed aspies, it's all my fault. I have no one but myself to blame for being one of the ones that big business tactics harms. I have no one but myself to blame for not being neurotypical enough to successfully prostitute myself through misleading resumes and theatrical interview tactics.
I think "bad times" can last decades if we are not neurotypical enough to successfully engage in the politics required to succeed in the failing "global economy".
