Well I cannot say what it is for everyone.......but in my case I was in pretty bad psychological pain due to depression and having been frequently picked on/bullied by teachers and other students also my parents not getting along certainly did not help. And finally there was a lot of self hate going on......like 'if I feel so bad I must deserve it for some reason.' so then I'd obsess over why I deserve it and of course that would just make me feel worse about myself. And of course feeling like people would better off if I was not here.

So from my perspective I was in pain, figured everyone else would be better off if I were dead(sometimes I still feel that way) so I did the only thing I could think to do and tried to overdose when I was 15. And while I have not attempted since I sometimes seriously consider it even to this day because that is the sort of mental hell I live with. But yeah I just don't think its appropriate to make judgemental, nasty comments about suicidal people in this forum since I imagine I am not the only one who deals with these kinds of issues here.

That's covered on number 1 of Fnord's list.

Look over each of the categories. Only psychosis removes the individual from the responsibility for committing suicide. Every other category is related to the person's self-centeredness in some way. Narcissism or Psychosis: Take your pick.
I got that. I still don't understand where you got the "I'll show them" comment.

From a suicide note I once read that was addressed to me ... an alcoholic relative got drunk and blew his brains out with a shotgun. The line after "I'll show them" read "Now they'll be sorry". He was angry at the world for not letting him be a financial parasite to the rest of us, and at me for trying to intervene and get him into rehab.

He was a stupid, self-centered, stinking, drunken, free-loading jackass, and we're all better off without him.

Me? Sorry?

Well I am glad all the difficulties and pain in my life can be defined as Depressed-exaggerates difficulties to the point of futility....thanks man I really needed that today.

I meant the generalized statement that suicide victims think of others in this way.

I'll keep my opinion about your relative to myself since it's none of my business.

You said it was covered in number 1, and did not specify that you did not agree with that........see the whole thing is I am trying to let Fnord know he should probably post the judgmental talk about suicide in the politics/religion forum or whatever rather then in The Haven where a lot of people struggling with suicidal thoughts post. Coming here to be mean about it is not going to convince anyone here to not feel suicidal or to not attempt......its just going to make it worse. I mean its a simple ethics thing and I am not even huge on ethics I just don't want to see people including myself hurt on the support section of a support website..........just seems wrong.

Oh how thoughtful of you.....it wasn't bad enough I felt bad about it in the first place, you just gotta rub it in right? Well I hope you got your laughs at least because I'm feeling much more down than I felt when I got up this morning.

Who said anything about "owing" or obligation?

People who commit suicide are obviously thinking only of themselves.

If they don't 'owe' anyone anything then your claim that its selfish is utterly vacuous. Its one thing if its a single parent with a young child or two heavily dependent on them, its different when its a bachelor/bachelorette, an elderly person, etc.

Fnord wrote:
If they think of others at all, it seem to be along the lines of "They'll be sorry", based on the notes they've left behind (the ones I've read, at least).

If they really think like that the last laugh is on them because people think about it for maybe a day or two and go right on living again - hence its stupid for retribution. If a person is trying to leave however because they just flat out don't want to be here, that analogy doesn't even factor in.

It is not my intent to sound callous but if you truly wanted to kill yourself you would not put it off until next year, you would do it after leaving a selfish suicide note telling your loved ones some excuse as to why you felt you needed to die. The fact that you are waiting a year says that subconsciously you want help, but you don't know how to look for it. The fact of the matter is that finding help couldn't be easier. Talk with your therapist and tell him/her you are having these thoughts, go places and meet people because making connections may result in finding your true love (because you won't find him/her sulking your life away). If you are worried about bugs getting in your food then clean your house until you can eat off of ANY surface in it and I mean squeaky clean.. Bugs don't like clean. Also throw food out after a couple days to ensure freshness. I have attempted suicide many times, with my final attempt nearly succeeding, but the fact that i lived made me think that I hadn't done what I was here to do. I toughed it out for the following 6 years and met the one (who is now snoring beside me in bed) and married her. I am glad that I didn't die, because I never would have found her.

TL:DR, don't do it because you will find your way, just let your life take its course

Again with the selfishness. :?

Also, I've learned over the years that we can't assume someone doesn't really want to die because x, y, or z. Everyone is different, and there are many reasons for doing things.

Oh, and not everyone leaves a note.

i think there are cases when a person commits suicide because they think they are doing other people a favour, so in the person's mind it is a selfless act. it's not possible to just label the act as selfish as some sort of blanket statement.

in some cases, suicide is intended to relieve the (physical/mental/emotional/spiritual/intellectual) suffering of the suicidal person, and in those cases it would technically be a selfish act. that doesn't make it wrong or misguided necessarily, but it would still be classed as selfish as the reasons are oriented towards the self.

the reasons for suicide are generally as complicated as the people involved, so i don't think it's possible for any of us to really see inside anyone else and judge them or label their motivations.

OP, if you are not in the proper "mood" for suicide, then i would guess that you are not really wanting to die, in spite of your logical conclusions that you should commit suicide. if you really wanted/needed to do it, then you would not need to get into the proper mood. perhaps this inner conflict will buy you some time to change your outlook and mindset. since you're alive now anyways and stuck at an impasse, you may as well try to get better.

Thanks Hyperlexian. This thread has been bothering me. I think you stated things well.
