Maybe you'll regret it later when you want chocolate and notice there's none left. :D

We put down a deposit on a little dog; a Schipperke. She's chocolate in color, my granddaughter named her Cocoa. My granddaughter has been very depressed. We hope a little being will lift her spirits. The quarantine is harder on my family, I'm okay. But, I don't have the influence over my grandchild that her friends do. She really misses being social. We pick up the dog on Monday, outside the Vets office. She's 9 weeks old.

I hope little Cocoa will be a comfort to her and all of you. Yes the young kids are having a hard time not socializing.

I am well.
I am beginning to feel like The Bird Man of Alcatraz only with rats. I still have them. They are so smart they manage to eat the bait from the trap and retire to what ever corner they are squatting in. I place a chair against the door to the bedroom area before I go to sleep because the thought of them jumping on my bed is yucky. I may have to call in an exterminator but as far as I know he would only put traps down as I have because if you poison them they just die inside inaccessible areas and stink. Sorry for being so gross.

What traps are you using and what is the bait?

Black sewer rats. I have a spring trap and a sticky trap which is gross because they suffer but I have no option. I used cheese, then found they love pretzels better, something with a strong odour. I caught three already using both kinds of traps. Meanwhile they are getting fat on my pretzels, I may add a little bowl of beer today to enhance their pleasure (joking of course) I am sure they carry disease. By the droppings I can see that they are young, not full size. I am reluctant to call in an expert because I am high risk for Corona with prexisting illnesses (lung, diabetes), and haven't allowed anyone near me in 4 weeks. I am not that distressed about the rats but I want them out :P

Have you tried making friends with the rats? I know pet rats are different but just imagine - people will sure keep their social distance if you say to them "I have pet sewer rats under my jacket".

Maybe I can train them to go to the supermarket and pharmacy? I could build a little cart  joking of course, I doubt they would know how to use my credit card.

They'd probably handle cash better... and you'd have to think up suitable names for them - a bit of a pain that!

I know them as brown sewer rats, haven't dealt with black rats, known to me as roof rats.
For spring trap bait:
Fatty meat and some of your chocolate!
Place a dab of melted chocolate onto the hook part of pedal as a glue followed by putting a small piece of fatty meat coated in melted chocolate through the hook on the pedal before the chocolate hardens.

They have to tug to get it off, most efficient use of the spring trap from my perspective.

You have to be careful of those traps. They could kill a rat. Dangerous they are!

Mind you. I know of one design of rat or mouse trap.
It consists of a hole large enough for their little heads to fit through and a straight sharp blade. The blade is placed just after the hole horizontally, so they reach over it to get the food placed just beond it.
Every day at the same time of day, you place some tasty food inside just beyond the hole and the blade. The little thing gets used to the routine of having his tasty snack, but one day you don't put any food in, and the rat or mouse goes "What no food?" As it shakes its little head saying "No", and it decapitates itself on the blade. Job done.

We had a terrible problem once. The home we lived in at the time was called a 'cracker house' (Southern). Luckily for us, the underpinning was in a state of disrepair, which was probably how the rats got in in the first place. But, we could hear the babies squeaking. We did the usual poison and they all fled out from under the house. We counted 18 rat corpses strewn about the lawn. No fun, for sure.
