The states of emergency do remind me of Chancellor Palpatine and the special emergency powers granted to him. The context was different of course...

Not worried about the virus but we need exercise some consideration towards elderly family members. Our country has just over 200 confirmed cases at latest update and we have three provinces with zero cases so far.

Maybe it is seasonal allergies messing with you sinuses. That would explain a runny nose and headache.

I'm not personally concerned. Not I or any of my immediate family, who are the only ones I regularly have contact with even when there isn't a pandemic going on, are in a high-risk group, so if I get it odds are I'll be perfectly fine, and my immediate family are the only ones I might spread it to, and odds are if they got it, they'd be perfectly fine, too. Though I do take practical steps like washing my hands and trying not to touch my face unless my hands have just been washed, and I cancelled my therapy appointment for yesterday because I didn't deem it absolutely necessary and it's in a hospital building and we sometimes encounter elderly people and people who may be otherwise medically vulnerable on the way in/out. My mom read a piece of advice that said to act like you're sick and trying to avoid infecting others instead of like you're trying to avoid infection yourself, and I would quite likely have had an anxiety/panic attack later about what if I or whoever brought me in was a carrier and responsible for giving one of these more vulnerable people the disease.

My allergies have been acting up and I don't have a cough or fever or anything so I'm not worried that it might be THE BIG ONE, but if I was to go out for any reason, I guess my sneezing and sniffling might encourage people to actually practice social distancing

Hope everyone is staying safe. Here's what I've been doing to stay safe in the soon to be largely locked down NY.

I have been shopping with N95 mask and goggles (swim goggles). After visiting 3 stores this weekend, I have yet to see anyone else with full face protection like this. Many wear surgical masks which are not useful for avoiding the virus. Surgical masks are for preventing the wearer from spread virus only. I will probably start wearing latex gloves but I'm not sure how useful that is. But can't hurt.

What if I have an accident in my apartment and no one will come to help me?
What if there's a fire and I can't leave my apartment or the firefighters won't come?
Why doesn't nuclear war just break out now that the world's defenses are down?
What if another major disaster strikes and many more people are sick or injured?
What if there's no freaking toilet paper left because human beings are IDIOTS?!?
What if it comes in waves and each time is more lethal than the last?

Why doesn't an asteroid just come and end the planet now because there's no point in being alive anymore?

Well I hear within the toilet paper shortage the bidet is getting more popular. So that is one idea or you could always just stick your butt in the shower after pooping not ideal, but it would do the job of cleaning you off. Also essential services should still be running so if there is a fire, there will be fire-fighters to come.

Also I don't want anything to end the planet, sure this is a rough time...but I am only 30 and I mean to live for at least 30 more. But also this crisis will end, the pandemic can't last forever there will be a time after so why not try and look forward to that.

You're thinking too much of worst case scenarios. It seems the system is still attempting to preserve the social order. It will hopefully not be for too long. Tough times don't last and now is the time for people to hopefully learn from their foolishness and for those among us who are NOT part of the general herd, to stay mentally tough. Let's stick together.

My grandmother was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, so I'm concerned about the prospect of her catching this virus, because I don't think there's any way she'd live through it if she did.

Tough times don't last, huh?

1918 flu pandemic - lasted from January 1918 until December 1920.
The great depression - lasted from 1929 until the late 30s.
WWII - Lasted from 1939 to 1945
War on terrorism - September 11, 2001, ongoing.
Persian Gulf Crisis - 2019, ongoing.
HIV/AIDS pandemic - was identified in the late 1980s, ongoing.

Not all of those affect everyone and all the time. Many of the older generation made it through all those things (depression, WW2 etc) and my late Gran was a kid during the 1918 Flu during which they helped people with the flu, wearing garlic and camphor sachets tied to their chests.

I also know people who have survived being infected with HIV and still living productive lives after many years.

(Hug) it’s awful knowing you have relatives who wouldn’t survive this if they caught it isn’t it?

My four year old nephew has cystic fibrosis: this will kill him if he catches it.

People are clocking in big groups to the coast here. Small towns on coast are most people. Clearly people are ignoring social distancing. It’s like they want a military lockdown

A military lockdown would just emphasize what many people fear - that the government doesn't care about them and just wants a show of force to intimidate them. It's difficult to enforce social distancing in public spaces such as beaches.

Luckily we're still fairly normal here at this time but libraries, art galleries and museums are temporarily closed and restaurants can't serve liquor after 6 pm. Supermarkets are offering special hours during when pensioners can do their shopping rather than have to shop with the masses.

Hard not to be when I and all my loved ones belong in at least one risk group.And yeah, the risks stack


So sorry about all that. It sucks everywhere. Not nearly enough places have closed down. It should all be closed down and food delivered in a clean, safe way, so very few had to go out at all. That would effectively stop the virus. Instead they think it'll last for up to a year or even more. It's maddening.

Indeed. The lives of the ones dying from Covid-19 is on the hands on the governments' failure worldwide to take it seriously enough and the selfish people who refuse to stay in quarantine spreading it to others and possibly vulnerable individuals.

Modern people aren't well equipped for this unprecedented issue. It's been 102 years since a similar situation and unfortunately the folk who could have advised us, such as my own gran who was just 11, are long gone.

What she did tell me is that they used to go and assist the sick, wearing a sachet containing garlic and camphor, and they didn't catch the flu.
