Teach, is it the inability to be born optimistic that we're born with or is it that optimism and positivity has become more like a cult in which one is not allowed to have a negative thought whatsoever cause our society says so? Sort of like the extremely religious puritan man who does everything and anything to get rid of all sinful thoughts because his society demands it.

Human beings have a full range of emotions we're meant to feel. Not optimism and happiness 24/7. We live in a brainwashed and deluded culture that encourages unhealthy thinking.
We don't need more optimistic thinking but more logical, critical and scientific based thinking.
Cube we have had this discussion before
Not a cult, a wonderful instinct that brings us through holocausts and hurricanes and unimaginable loss, and keeps us moving forward with hope for a better future. I always say that pessimism may be a middle class luxury, because those of us who need to work hard to sustain ourselves with absolutely no assistance, have no other option but to imagine that it can get better, or how would I manage to start the day? Optimism is the fuel that propels us through adversity. I do however believe that some people inherently lack optimism and it can't be artificially simulated.
Btw many people on WP are both logical and optimistic. Try Bach or Ella Fitzgerald instead of Leonard Cohen.
Holocaust would benefited more from negative thinking. Not positive “no way any human would do thst you’re just mistaken.” Genocides still happen today too. People still say the same thing positive thinking.
Maybe if the allies had though negatively less people would been murdered, instead they thought positive and that mean thinking the Nazis couldn’t do such things, despite being told they were.
Sly, we can't change history and yes, terrible mistakes were made. My country, Israel, was fought for and established by Holocaust survivors and refugees who endured unimaginable suffering and persecution. Seven decades later, under conditions of a perpetual threat of destruction to this day, we are ground- breakers in medicine, technology, cyber, agriculture, science, aviation and many other fields. We have no resources of fresh water so we learned to desalinate sea water. We are bombed constantly by our enemies so we developed the Iron Dome anti -missile system. We have judo Olympic champions and we have won the Eurovision Song Contest several times. We don't bomb German embassies or complain about what we lost, we live every day as a gift.It is necessary to count our blessings and fight for a better future. It's a state of mind. People can love us or hate us in Israel but no-one can accuse us of not being optimistic or living in blame or a pessimistic state of mind.
So, no- one should ever think that hope is fiction, problems are not insurmountable, though much of optimism is founded on faith.
Positive thinking would been to not develop iron dome and say it’ll all be ok the rockets probably won’t hit anyone and they wouldn’t keep launching rockets at us right? Mean humans wouldn’t do that to other humans.
Your nation knows from experience how humans are and so use negative thinking to develop things to stop such things rather the. Hoping and thinking it won’t happen. Your nation doesn’t trust the nations around it and that’s negative thinking. Positive thinking would trust the nations around them and take them at their words of peace and not prepare for attacks. People like me do negative thinking so others can live in dream worlds where everything goes right. But everything seldomly goes right. That’s why you have the IDF. That’s why the USA has national guard, FEMA, etc. that why every nation has people who think of and plan for bad situations. I’d been the person escaping the getto cause things can get worse instead of the ones saying it can’t get worse and don’t believe those rumors about death camps and gas chambers.
Quite a few escaped and hid in woods forming resistance groups. A lot of them died too but their negative thinking keep them free longer.
Personally my negative thinking has keep me alive and sheltered. I’ve always kept savings and been prepared. If I’d been positive thinking I’d spend all my money since everything will be alright. How many people have the 2 weeks food supply government recommend? Not many cause nothing will happen it’ll be fine, until a storm hits and it’s not and your positive thinking leaves one with no food and it takes government two weeks to get food and water to you.
I can’t stand overly positive people.
I gues though someone not over positive would be good Match for me I could ground them and they could lift me up.
Also tends to be the positive people who tell me to shut up.
Oh and your nation actively hunted down nazis and brought them to justice where rest of the word just moved on and said oh well.
I’ll always support Israel, though as a Christian I could never live there.

It's true that optimism and happiness are treated like a cult in our society. However, I highly doubt that is what this tread is about.
There are people who pretend to be always happy in an almost cult like manner.
There are people who express a range of emotions.
And then there are people who are constantly depressed, constantly hopeless and can't believe that anything will ever get better. It seems like the later category is what this tread is about. Always assuming the worst and insisting that everything is hopeless is no more logical than blind optimism. It can become a self fulfilling prophecy, though, as people are less inclined to try hard, try again if they fail and move out of their comfort zone if they are already sure it won't pay off.
One extreme may be glorified by society. However, that doesn't mean that the other extreme can't be a real problem.
There are a few who have no intention of doing anything differently, but will submit a post for 'help' as if they will. I wish they could bring themselves to say, " don't invest a lot of emotion or time in your responses, because although I have made a thread for suggestions, I will list reasons why nothing you suggest will work. " Then we know, 'okay, for some reason this individual is stuck right now. " This individual may not stay stuck, or they may. But, it would be a courtesy if we knew ahead of time.
I would not consider myself a happy go lucky "ON" individual, at ALL. But I lean toward believing that most made made problems have a solution. I don't know what that could be categorized as, maybe stubborness? But, it works for me.
Can you disprove the list of reasones?
Here’s how I see it
Me: I can’t fly
Person:sure you can just do it
Me:no I don’t have wings I can’t fly
Person:that’s just an excuse to jump off a cliff and fly.
Sorry I have to live in reality where due to my condition and position in life I’m super limited. No amount if just do it can make a human fly. Humans can’t fly we aren’t birds, we aren’t Superman.
Maybe the people offering help could accept that and that the person wanting help has already tried a lot of things before getting desperate enough to ask for help.
Me:I can’t get in my house
Person:have you tried opening the door
Me:oh no like I’d total it thought if that simple thing , the doors locked I can’t open it.
Two sides to everything and I tend to side with the sad person cause I’ve been treated as their treated. I don’t think successful people have any advice to offer they didn’t live our life they got lucky, luck is all there is to it.
My examples are pretty basic.
Him: I keep losing my glasses
Me and a few others: Get a glasses chain
Him: I can't, I feel confined by a chain.
Okay, I don't know what else to tell you then.
You can list crazy examples like wanting to fly, but the majority of examples presented here are solvable.

So, from your viewpoint, I can offer you advice
I have learned not to assume the worst.....nor envision the best.
Just because 80% of people can't do something doesn't mean I can't be one of the 20% (even though I have all the characteristics of the 80%).
You've read a lot of history---and you're a smart guy in general. You have overcome a lot, and have kept a job for a long time.
So why not seek to think the "glass is half full" sometimes----instead of it always being "half empty."
But you are successful
Would you jump into a half empty swimming pool? Even if you think really hard it’s half full?
My glass is empty

Telling someone who’s poor on disability, doesn’t own a car and barely making by to move to another state is horrible advice that’s not practical. Well off people have a hard enough time moving to another state without a job and place lined up first.
Telling someone who’s too disabled to work to just get a good job isn’t good advice.
Just pull yourself up from the boot straps they say.
Most wouldn’t live a day in my life without killing them self’s.
A good day in my life is a horrible day in theirs.
It’s be like if bill gates gave you advice” just be rich”

He: I can't fly.
Me: You can just do it if you try.
He: Yeah, but I don’t have wings.
Me: Can you build some?
He: Yeah, but I don't have money.
Me: Can you earn some?
He: Yeah, but I don't have a job.
Me: Can you look for a job?
He: Yeah, but no one will hire me.
Me: Can you learn some skills?
He: Yeah, but it takes too long.
Me: Can you borrow some wings?
He: Yeah, but I might crash.
Me: Can you fly low?
He: Yeah, but the low spots are far away.
Me: Can you relocate?
He: Yeah, but I would have to fly there.
Me: Have you tried flying?
He: Yeah, but I can't fly.
(Several iterations later...)
Me: You don't really need to fly, do you?
He: You don't want me to fly, so get out of here!
He: Yeah, but no one will hire me and I don't understand the hiring process including the personality tests.
Me: Can you learn some skills and research the hiring process and the personality tests?
He: I do have skills but employers want in addition to those skills a certain personality type and experience. How do I over come that.
Me: Well maybe you can get some job coaching but in the mean time Can you borrow some wings? Maybe you could try to research these things.
He: Yeah, but I might crash because I don't have any training to use them properly and I don't want to be responsible if I damage someone else's property. It would take money to obtain that training and to obtain money requires employment. I've give you my reason I can't obtain employment. As for job coaching that takes money too. As for researching, I did try to research. The information out there is either scant, I don't follow it so I would need others to explain it further which they won't do or there is a lot of misinformation to sort through. So, we're still at square one. Now what?
Me: Umm, Can you fly low?
He: Ok, that's a really excellent idea. I didn't even think of that. But, only one problem. I still don't have any training and training cost money. And, to get money one has to have a job. And to get a job one has to have skills, personality and experience. And, one has to be able to have the proper social skills even though one is constantly told to be true to oneself. Are you willing to let me borrow yours and are you willing to train me with them?
Me: (shows reluctance) Can you relocate?
He: Yeah, but I would have to fly there.
Me: Have you tried flying?
He (getting frustrated): Yeah, but I can't fly and I already f*****g told you this and I already f*****g gave you my reasoning.
(Several iterations later...)
Me : You don't really need to fly, do you?
He (extremely pissed off and struggling to keep from melting down): That's a bunch of BS and you know it! It isn't that I don't need or desire to fly. It's that you a**hole are giving overly-simplistic pat answers and that you're not understanding the issue in a comprehensive way. Are you willing to sit down, work with me and understand the issues I have? The first step in solving a problem is identifying what the problem is and you sir think you understand the issue well but you really don't. You think you're this wise guru when you are an ignorant person. So, if you're not willing to be my Henry Higgins then go the f**k on.
Me: Another person who doesn't want help or to better himself.
He: *Overhears sarcastic quip* Yells in a rage when calmly explaining things "HOW IN THE f**k DO I HELP OR BETTER MYSELF WHEN I DON'T KNOW HOW, I RESEARCH AND THE RESEARCH LEAVES ME MORE CONFUSED AND NO ONE INCLUDING YOURSELF WILL SIT DOWN AND BREAK THINGS DOWN TO ME? AND, HOW IN THE f**k AM I EXPECTED TO HAVE THE RIGHT GODDAMNED PERSONALITY WHEN I'M TOLD AND OTHERS ARE TOLD CONSTANTLY TO BE THEMSELVES.
Me: *Runs off. This person is f*****g psycho!"

The thing is though is positivity has to be genuine and come from the heart. If one is punished for not being optimistic and positive including exclusion and excommunication by others and challenging the ideas and tenets of positive thinking and optimism is considered pessimism and negative thinking then it is a cult. Even if it is instincts as you say and optimism health wise is better then pessimism but if one has to fake this optimism then it becomes more of a form of thought control just like cults do.
The attitude is "get positive or get out."

I haven't followed all of the thread, but I am amused that related to this topic, this implies after you'd jump into the half-empty pool you'd suffer. And you jumped in because you were addicted to suffering.
I suffer a lot.
I overheard them saying I would pretty much be a vegetable the rest of my life.
I have gotten past that to some degree but am still unable to do much.
I have significant cognitive and physical disabilities that do not allow me to do much.
And certain chronic illnesses that cause me pain and hamper me.
But I maintain a positive attitude and get the best I can out of life with what I have rather than what I don't.
If I had a defeatist attitude instead of a yes I can attitude, I probably would not be able to be writing this.
One thing that helps is knowing others have it worse than me.
I think about that rather than those who have it better.
I think of a guy I know who is a C-5 quadriplegic.
While there are a lot of things I can not do and things I can not do without help, there is nothing he can do on his own and without help in comparison to me.
I can at least get up from my chair and get a glass of water, he can't
I can get up from my chair and go into the bathroom to pee and then go back to my desk relatively easily. He can't.
I can snack at my desk grabbing chips or peanuts to eat and a can or bottle of whatever to drink. He can't.
I can enjoy hours of playing my online video game, he can't since he has practically no use of his hands and fingers.
But he also has a positive attitude. He is thankful that he can breath on his own without needing a respirator.
Imagine that. Being thankful and happy over being able to breath on your own.
There is an old saying that goes; I cried about not having shoes until I met a man who had no feet.

Sly, I do love reading your posts, you have a true and honest heart.
I wish to propose a question to you: Do you think innovation is a product of negativity and the prediction of doom and gloom, or, does innovation symbolize a reluctance to stay stuck in a negative status quo, striving for something better?
Did Einstein wake up every morning and say to himself " there is absolutely no point in my thinking because the grey matter in my brain is degenerating rapidly, I'll be dead in ten years anyway so I'm just going to sit here and wait for my body to decompose." Or did he have this awesome drive to discover, solve, determine and implement?
I do honestly think though that nobody has the right to criticize anyone elses addiction to suffering, inability to see light at the end of tunnel or sense of lack of hope. We are each imprisoned in our emotional default. I also know that the support of my friends has literally saved my life in times when I have not been able to save myself.
