Stupid DVD/VCR player!

I'm not sure if this is in the right place. If it isn't, feel free to move it. I have a DVD/VCR player from the Sony brand. I've had it for 4-5 years but didn't start using it until 2 years ago because I didn't have my own little TV until my 8th grade semi in which I won one. It played DVDs just fine, though I never used it for VHS tapes. But for some STRANGE reason, when I try to open the DVD thing that you put DVDs in, it refuses to open! I have Direct TV and I tried pressing TV input like I usually do and go to channel 3 and everything, and it STILL WILL NOT OPEN! My dad and I tried to hook up another little DVD player to it, but for some STRANGE reason, it plays EVERYTHING in black and white and with no sound! What's up with that!?

hook up your av(audio/video) cord to the av jacks, see if that helps the picture and sound. Not sure why it won't open.A/V cord has red and white ends

The yellow cable for composite video which the TV has is in the Green Jack is Y on Component Video so Just move the cable from the Green Jack to the Yellow Video Jack. I had to do that for my grandparents as the satellite TV installer hooked it up wrong when the plugged one end of the cable in the Satellite box in the green jack and into the AV modulator in to the yellow jack, so I moved the satellite box end of the cable into the yellow jack on the box. As for The DVD drive either the drive motor is worn out or it is stuck or binding against the front panel so try taking the front panel of and see if the drive tray moves freely.

The other DVD players sound cables might be plugged in to the video jacks and not the sound jacks or the wires in the cables are broken.
