Why do people feel the incessant need to talk talk talk! Nonstop! Strangers, coworkers, anyone, will just walk right up to me and talk, loudly, into my ear. No matter what I am doing, no matter who they are.
Blah blah blah, mundane gibberish, overwhelming my senses, making me become annoyed and frustrated. Useless smalltalk. Purposeless banter.
I just want to shout at them:
"Can't you see that I am busy?!"
or
"I'm sorry, but I don't know you!"
or
"Back off, you're blasting my eardrums!"
Of course, I don't want to be rude. It's apparently socially inappropriate to be around other humans and not go out of my way to interact with them. Not that I would walk up to random strangers to make idle chit-chat with them, but I don't aggressively drive them away when they come up to me.
So they go out of their way to follow me around, shout some meaningless greeting into my ear, and talk about things so obvious that they do not need to be mentioned, such as the weather. All out of social politeness.
And out of social politeness, all I can do is smile and nod, utter some meaningless reciprocal phrase to make them feel better, and silently hope that they go away soon.
