I want to ask you folks about interests and hobbys. In the last few years, I have noticed I've gone off my hobbys; playing violin and guitar and amateur radio. I think this has something to do with depression.

But recently, I've been trying to work out what my interests are and how much I persue them because when I think about myself, I think I am really boring and have nothing to talk about or say that I do. I think what has happened to me is I have been trying to avoid certain interests because I have found other people think they are boring. Like buses, for example. Nobody wants to hear about buses, but sometimes you can't shut me up because I love talking about them. So, in an attempt to be "normal" I have been working hard to try and find interest in other things like films and football etc. But, I don't seem to be any use at that either because I never have a clue what I'm talking about and it just doesn't work.

So, trying to be more interesting, I have been taking my thought and time away from what I initially find interesting and putting it into more mainstream things. In doing that, I now can't say I'm the most knowledgable person in politics etc AND I'm lost with fashion, actors and drinks. It's a disaster. I'm having a bit of a crisis because it really messes up your self identity. Anyone got any advice for this sort of thing?

I've noticed some of my interests come and go in intensity. Honestly, I haven't been on the air much myself, recently. I know there's lots of us hams on here, maybe we should try getting an aspie net started on 40 or 80....

I used to really be into CBs when I was 16, I still remember my old Binatone 5 star :)

As for trying to absorb 'normal' hobbies, what's normal anyway?? I thought the point of a hobby was because it's an interest that makes you happy, if it's not making you happy, or you're not really doing it for you, then is it still a hobby?

I tried all that myself, and I couldn't make myself be remotely interested in that sort of thing, while girls my age were into boyfriends and dating, I was sat at home trying to figure out the best way to get a +30 signal on my CB :D And I don't regret any of it, even though I'm not into CBing any more......

I think if there's something out there you enjoy, as long as you don't hurt others or break the law then go ahead and enjoy whatever it is you're fond of learning about/doing, and to hell with what others think, there's nothing wrong with being into buses, at least to me there isn't, they're quite intersting things (I used to be a bus driver you see!)

I think that is what I will have to do. This is one reason I want to be diagnosed because I have the desire to be normal, but I can't help wanting to focus on special interests so much. I am going to stop holding myself back and just get right into it.

I sometimes listen to the my local bus company's two way radio channel. Two of my special interests combined, you don't get much more exciting than that!!

We should definately do that! I'm off air just now as I've just moved house, so the station isn't set up yet. But hopefully it won't be long as I'm dying to see what I can do this time.
