A Test of Faith

Religion is very important to me, and I'm a practicing Roman Catholic, but lately I've been having some troubles.

There is currently, in the city of Chicago, a certain gathering of Christian ministers and Priests for political purposes. Or at least, it would seem so, though they are unconnected. It certainly receives a lot of media coverage, if nothing else. I find it...trying to say the least. I've come strongly to the conviction that because religion is supposed to exist in a state above politics. It is to where man can turn his quivering eye and cease the petty arguments as he concerns himself with a higher cause, that it should not be used for political purposes.

I understand that it is usual for everyone to have their faith tested, but I certainly hope that it is not alone I must suffer.

I don't see where the test is. Faith is a personal thing, and I think that religion should be personal too, and should never be mixed with politics, because it just leads to bad things.

Politics and religion are each hot topic. But they are what shape our lives. Its a fine line, the Bible often conflicts with proposed laws. Is it wrong for a person of the cloth to politically stand for what he/her believes in?

When some laws are based on morals and not facts, religion will always play a part in it.

I'm a Christian (ex RC, but don't let that put you off me.) I do know what you mean... Not sure if it can be publically discussed here without the trolls jumping down our throats, but I do find it hard when religious folks of any ilk jump on political band wagons. They're supposed to be ambassadors for Christ, not jockying for position in the world of politics.

Thank you both for responding so quickly. I'm not sure that we need fear any trolls; I trust The Haven. I was not saying its wrong for religion to make strong statements about morality when there is some action by a government that is considered to be immoral in the eyes of that religious doctrine. My concern was when specific individuals used religion for personal gain, which is very difficult for me to swallow.

Unless you assossicate yourself with these people specifically, you shouldn't let it test your faith. People who use religion to satisfy their own greed are just wrong and certainly don't represent all of their fellow religious followers. Just try not to think about it
