At school, I just recently started getting good grades, and just as I was beggining to have hope that I might graduate high school, people found a new way to torture me: Loudly cracking their gum. When they do this, It takes me about 10 minutes to regain any focus on my work. The gum snapping has happened so much these past few weeks, Its drained me emotionly so now just one snap will drive me to tears. My grades are suffering and im so depressed I can barely walk. I feel like a depressed zombie just lurching through my life. Even though I know for a fact that I have a supportive and loving family, Im losing the will to live.

Does anyone know anyway to desensitize myself to the gum snaps? Im willing to do anything.

And Ive already tried talking to my teachers. In fact, Ive complained so much that theyre starting to join the students.

Auditory scensory difficulty is not fun. Maybe to some people it sounds like whineing, but they don't understand how it feels then. It's horribly frustrating. More so, when people just don't get the picture. (and they think we're stupid?) Besides, chewing gum in class has a "no no" rule on it for a good reason. Why is everybody chewing their $% gum in there? WTF.. Honestly, if they cheew right next to you, I think that is pretty rude of them.

First, having patience there is critical. I know it's not going to be very easy, let alone very possible to ignore the sounds. Second, I found practicing a faster, smoother memory is a big help for most curcumstances. Sounds happens, then the memory can help the process continue maybe. If it repeats too soon or keep going, what else are you supposed to do? Wait till it stops? Stare at the rude, idiot gum chewer? *hugs*

Kimmy Kimmy Kimmy you have the cutest avatar ever.

But on a serious note, try using ear plugs or something.
I have auditory sensory issues as well and went through school pissed of as hell, if it were legal I'd smash everyone making loud noises to dust, but you'll learn to cope.

Earplugs.
I don't think people have any concept of the distress they can cause with this sort of noise.
I am very sensitive to noise too, and have resorted to wearing earplugs all the time now at home due to noisy people.
music through headphones might be another option.
noise can be so intrusive. Even the sound of other people eating bothers me.

Jeah damn sounds everywhere, I had the misfortune of being very sensitive to my mothers voice (roars).

Are they doing it on purpose just to annoy you?

At first people were doing it only out of habit, but after some jerks found out that it bothers me, they do it on puropse.

When I was at school, pupils weren't allowed to chew gum in class.

I love your signature BTW 8) .

That's what I thought. I have learned from experience that telling people (except close friends, of course) about your sensory issues is a big mistake in an environment like school, because there certainly are a lot of jerks who find our reactions entertaining.

I have a big problem with being touched by strangers, so I got very upset when a girl at school grabbed my arm to tell me we had to go down to the hall (touching me seems very unnecessary in these circumstances). It wouldn't have been so bad if she'd just done it once as an honest mistake, but then she started touching my arm on purpose and mocking me, so I tried to push her away, so she punched me in the face. Such a nice girl

This sort of thing torments me too. And it must be bad in a pretty quiet environent like a classroom. My Dad has a habit of making noises with his mouth and I try to avoid showing my annoyance as much as possible, so I know the feeling.

I would get up, walk to the front of the room, scratch down the chalkboard (yeah I HATE THAT sound and so do most people) and say "THAT is what popping your gum does to me so now can you PLEASE not do it?"

But shame lot of schools don't have them anymore. They have been replaced by marker boards. I have never heard that sound before, ever. Only on High School High and it sounded annoying. But sounds are different on TV.

The sound in High School High isn't too far removed from the reality. Good film BTW.

Well it bothered my ears in the theater when I saw it but on TV it was different. It didn't seem as loud.

Schools really shouldn't allow gum let alone crap like that, I've never understood the point of popping gum like that and odds are I never will. If the teachers aren't reacting you should go higher. If it's affecting you as much as you say it's well worth it to take it to the next higher authority, principal or what not.
