I was posting on another forum how I support voluntary population control. I noted that it was VOLUNTARY, and noted that I would NOT support gas chambers. I got a bunch of angry responses accusing me of wanting to gas people, and of wanting forced abortions! What part of VOLUNTARY and NOT SUPPORT don't you understand?

This has happened to me before. One time, during a discussion on weight, I noted that I ate bag after bag of candy WHEN I WAS A TEEN, BUT NO LONGER, and promptly got called a pig who should die. All people see is what they want to see, it seems, or they speed read and only read part of what you're saying, then a flamewar ensues. And they absolutely can NOT be dissuaded from their initial assessment. It's useless trying to argue weighty issues with morons who are addicted to sound bites!

And this was a forum where they hate the mainstream media, among other things. In fact, I keep stepping in poo on this forum because they are quick to gang up on somebody, and slow to let off. I will post something and get a ton of angry responses, and it's been like that there from day one. So much for free speech, I guess. Libertarian and survivalist forums all over the net are quick to ban people for saying anything the mods don't like. I guess the First Amendment only applies when it's speech they LIKE. Thomas Jefferson would be APPALLED!

doesnt happen here a lot, but theres another forum where i post, where it happens all the time:

one good example that went completely out of hand was a thread i made about tv.

Title: "i spent a week without any tv."
Page one:
OP: " i loved it! [ rant about tv being a curse on society ]"
replies along the lines of:
"tv sucks"
"a week? thats nothing"
"you cant go for a week without tv!?"

Page two:
"hey, i went for days without watching tv. im fine!"
"you shouldnt watch so much tv dude!"
"hey, i went for a month without a tv, and i was fine. you got issues dude. less tv for you!"

it went on for page after page about how i should be able to tolerate a week without tv, when my original message was how much i cherished a week without tv.
i finally changed the topic title to:
"i went a week without tv. i liked it. i hate tv. tv bad! no-tv good! please read before replying. read original message! do not reply before reading"

intolerable situation :D

I agree that if you are going to gas people that cyanide based compounds/mixtures require too much filtering and are not good for the environment. Instead try pure nitrogen that way when you are done just use a big fan to clear the N2 harmlessly into the atmosphere.

You should start telling those people to go back to England to learn how to speak English or tell them they sure can't speak very good English. Or tell them they need to improve their reading skills.

It took you 34 years to realize this? Don't worry you're not alone. At least now you can stop caring and enjoy the next 34 :D

I never thought of it before. I only knew people want to think what they want to think, people want to believe what they want to beleive, people want to hear what they want to hear. But seeing? OMG.

Why?

They really do need to read posts right and quit ignoring words people say in their posts. I get so sick of stupid people. I only cut them some slack if English is not their primary language because they might not have translated my post right when they read it.

It happens here on WP too. I've seen it a few times today alone. I'm probably guilty of it too sometimes.

Ah, I've observed this! My assessment is that the vast majority of people are idiots or, if not, become idiots at times.

Sometimes, when this occurs in person, I'll tell them something to the effect of: "You know, that's about the farthest thing from what I said that you could possibly have come up with. Seriously, it would've been more coherent to randomly shout the word 'cows'.".

Yeah I notice this trend a lot, on fora and IRL. People see and hear what they wish to, it seems. Just yesterday I noticed a post here asking if we are were more prone to be victims of criminal activities. Quite a few thought the question was if we were more likely to be criminal.

Some years ago I read on BBC’s teletext that the diabetes sites in England were too difficult to understand as they were on the reading level of an educated 16 year old, while the reading level of the general population was like that of an educated 9 year old. WTF? Can that really be right?? Are people on average that bad readers? 8O

QTF. I have experienced this many times on other forums as well. Its rediculous the kind of conclusions people jump to and then for some reason when you try to clarify or explain your position, it makes them angry and/or feel even more justified in their irrational assumptions. I do not understand this at all.

A couple of good examples that I've experienced were on a forum where people supposedly give relationship "advice" and I used to go there when I had a very troubled marriage. I posted about how my non-ex husband only initiated intimacy when I was drunk.. which happened a total of 2 times but enough to establish a pattern on his part because he initiated 0 times before that and they all starting saying I have a drinking problem.... way to grasp at straws, morons.

Another occasion was on the same forum as above and they were trying to insult me and my current boyfriend. They quoted his a section of his blog (on here actually) where he talked about his ex in an unflattering manner and they were saying that it was about me when within their very own quote it talked about how the relationship was over so it very clearly was not about me since, obviously, we're still together. And pointing this out did nothing to dissuade their opinion that he was talking about me. For the simple fact that they wanted to find something insulting about me.

People are so frigging stupid and stubborn and non-fact based and have ret*d bias filters on thier eyes so they only see what they want to see and I hate them!! I hate people who are like that

Forums are usually open to anyone who wants to join them, and people feel fairly secure that even if they're wrong there won't be any repercussions.
Stating anything really personal or against the grain on a forum isn't much unlike shouting it in a villiage square, you might get helpful advice depending on where you are, but there's also the likelyhood someone will call you an idiot or worse.
