After witnessing a violent attack on my friend and having our lives threatened, I have lost what little motivation I had to carry on with life. This is a bad time because I have two assignment deadlines that are imminent. I don't want to let this beat me, but whenever I try to work all I can think is what happened. The situation is complex because of our relationship to the attacker, though I don't want to go into too much detail in case he comes to this forum or something.

What are the assignments? School or work?
How much can you tell the teacher or boss?
If it's school, you should be able to get some kind of an extension, just because it's a good excuse.
Work might be a little more complicated. What would be the practical, business consequences of postponing it?

In order to help with the above, is there any kind of police report of the attack and the threat on you?

a copy of your witness statement (if u made one to the police) will be useful.

Go to the police, press charges, and file a restraining order against the attacker if he is let out on bail, although the court might impose that as a bail condition.

I would also recommend keeping a gun or a knife or some sort of weapon at the ready in case he does come after you.

I'm going to make a witness statement at some point. I went down to the police station today but it was closed to the public! I'll have to go somewhere else.

I also handed in extenuating circumstances form so hopefully I'll get a chance to resit the second assessment. Too late for the first since I've already done it, but luckily I will have enough evidence for them to accept it for the second. This is at college and the attacker and victim are both students. I live with them both but the victim dares not to return to our house. I have to continue living with the attacker since the landlord is unable to evict him. He may be able to deny responsibility because he was drunk, and although he has not denied the attack he has denied the level of violence he used. It was violent enough at least to frighten me and scare his victim into going out into the streets rather than being in the house with him even though he was his best friend, and then the attacker complaining about injuring his fist in the attack.

Unfortunately in the UK guns are prohibited. Now's the time I really wish I had one.

You need time to recover and have a valid reason to pause your studies.

Can you stay some place else?

Write down all the details of what you remember happened. It is harder to recall latter on. Was there any cctv around, was it out doors?

What county are you in? That would give me an idea if a custodial sentence is likely.

This is why gun control costs more lives than it actually saves.Hopefully in Canada, the gun control nuts don't get to ban handguns completely and that hopefully the scrapping of the long gun registry in the senate passes here in Canada. We need LESS gun control NOT more of it.

Canada's legal system is similar to the UKs since ours originates from the UK.As far as I know, you are entitled to use any force necessary to defend yourself. If the attacker attacks you and you use force, you are justified to do so.

As far as the landlord situation goes, you can go to court and force an order upon him to evict the guy.In Canada, if a tenant is a danger, the landord can throw him out within 24 hours notice...at least thats the case in Alberta. You can also get the victim to move back in then force a restraining order on the attacker, thus making the attacker live out on the streets instead.

Restraining orders are nice, though even soldiers don't always follow orders.

But what can be done to ease fear and stress? :?

A little divine intervention?

I just hope the victim goes to the police and then the university will find it easier to deal with the attacker. So far he has been quite idle but recently he went to see the student services which is a good start. The landlord cannot evict the attacker because of he's in a joint contract with all of us, if that's even a valid reason.

I strongly suspect we're dealing with a sociopath here. After observing his behaviour from when I first lived with him up until now his behaviour does seem very... sociopathic. It's not normal to say the least.

You could all just get a new place and end the tenancy, thus leaving the attacker homeless as well or left with a big amount of rent to pay.....2 for you-0 for attacker.
